At the foot of Sanwei Mountain, by the Danquan River, Mogao Grottoes stand quietly. The 735 grottoes on the cliff wall, after thousands of years of vicissitudes, like an old man full of wealth in the twilight of his vaguely visible Silk Road civilization, murals and statues are irreversibly aging, and the protection of Mogao Grottoes is in crisis.
How to protect these murals? This is the most pressing question facing the people of the Mogao Grottoes. In Cave 55 of the Mogao Grottoes, the person in charge of the Conservation Institute of the Dunhuang Academy led the team to skillfully use mural restoration tools, dust removal, injection of reinforcing agents, repasting, desalination, and a series of restoration processes to rejuvenate the thousand-year-old murals.
The restoration of the cave paintings is a race against time and is extremely difficult. The restoration of murals should follow science and race against time. In order to make the restoration work more scientific and accurate, the Dunhuang Academy has created a mural restoration effect evaluation system based on non-destructive analysis technology, using a series of technologies such as thermal infrared imaging, optical coherence tomography technology, digital microscope, etc., to achieve quantitative evaluation of scientific restoration on the basis of fully grasping the mural process materials and change process.
With the efforts of several generations of restorers, the murals of the Mogao Grottoes have been well protected, and a large number of endangered murals have been rescued. However, how to better enhance the experience of tourists and meet people's yearning for Mogao Grottoes, the Dunhuang Academy began to explore as early as 2014.
In the dome theater of the Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center, the Bodhisattvas are coming, the graceful flying sky is almost about to soar, and the cave murals are exquisite. VR technology allowed the nine-colored deer to "fly down" from the mural and leap to the side. Such an immersive experience makes Dunhuang no longer far away.
In the 80s of the 20th century, the Dunhuang Academy put forward the concept of "digital Dunhuang". Since then, batch after batch of Mogao Grottoes people have continued to deepen the integration of culture and technology, and strive to make cultural relics "live" and "walk" out. In Cave 341, which was excavated in the early Tang Dynasty, the digital collection work is progressing in an orderly manner.
At present, the Dunhuang Academy has completed the high-precision collection of 290 caves in the Mogao Grottoes, completed the production of panoramic roaming programs for 180 caves and the three-dimensional reconstruction of 7 large ruins, established a complete set of key technical systems such as digital collection, processing, storage and display of cultural relics, and formed a large number of digital resources such as digital photography collection, three-dimensional reconstruction of caves, and panoramic roaming of caves.
Today, the "Digital Dunhuang" resource library platform is online and used around the world, and has become an important window and brand for disseminating Dunhuang culture to the world. Jointly built and launched the world's first time-space participatory museum "Digital Scripture Cave" with Tencent, and launched the "Dunhuang Testament Database", the Dunhuang Academy's all-media platform in 2022 reached 400 million views, covering 120 countries and regions...... In every square inch, at a glance for thousands of years, digital technology has allowed Dunhuang to survive forever, bringing immortal and eternal Dunhuang culture to the world.
The research course of "Mogao Academy" has opened up another path for Dunhuang culture to go global.
In recent years, the Dunhuang Academy has held more than 80 Dunhuang art exhibitions in dozens of cities at home and abroad, and carried out nearly 800 public welfare projects such as "Dunhuang Cultural Station" and "Dunhuang Cultural Watchman", showing and promoting the research results of Dunhuang culture to the world through multiple ways.
Literature and art are the clarion call of the times. In recent years, Gansu Province has continuously launched a number of literary and artistic masterpieces with Dunhuang as the theme, such as "Dunhuang Benji", "Dunhuang Again" and "Mogao School Series", and promoted the revision and upgrading of classic performing arts such as "See Dunhuang Again", "Silk Road Flower Rain" and "Dunhuang Grand Ceremony", so that Dunhuang culture and art can shine on the world stage. The ancient Dunhuang art is going out of the grottoes and into the world in many ways, making important contributions to enhancing the international influence of Chinese civilization, strengthening exchanges and mutual learning with the "Belt and Road" countries, enhancing people-to-people bonds, and jointly building a community with a shared future for human networks.
The people of Mogao Grottoes have always regarded the Mogao spirit of "sticking to the desert, being willing to dedicate, having the courage to take responsibility, and forging ahead" as spiritual wealth and the core driving force, and followed the work direction of "protection, research, and promotion".
Thousands of years are too far away from us, but the murals and painted sculptures in the Mogao Grottoes allow us to have a dialogue with history. Historically, Dunhuang has witnessed the great prosperity of friendly exchanges between countries on the ancient Silk Road, and written a new chapter in human development and progress. At a new starting point, the "Dunhuang Plan" allows Gansu to move from a province with large cultural resources to a strong cultural province, and contributes to Gansu's strength in serving the construction of the "Belt and Road".
