Rizhao Vocational and Technical College was approved by the Ministry of Education in 1998 to become the first public higher vocational college in Shandong Province, since 2004 to join the work, Fu Ning has been engaged in aquaculture technology professional teaching and scientific research, technical services and technology promotion and other work.
After coming to Tumantal Township, Maigaiti County, Fu Ning found that it is close to the Yarkand River, with 11 small ponds and dams, 13.4 square kilometers of wetland Qiandao Lake, rich water resources, and tidal flat ponds are idle. With many years of professional practice and scientific experience, a picture of aquaculture in the desert slowly took shape in his mind.
"The aquaculture technology of Rizhao Vocational and Technical College is introduced, and at the same time, the technical transformation and upgrading are carried out according to the local reality, if the Australian freshwater lobster can be successfully cultivated in the dry desert hinterland, it can be promoted on a large scale, increase farmers' income, and benefit the local people. At the end of 2020, with the support of the Rizhao Xinjiang Aid Headquarters and the technical support of the professional team of the Fisheries Department of Rizhao Vocational and Technical College, the two places jointly carried out the Australian freshwater lobster experimental breeding project, and established the first Australian freshwater lobster breeding experimental and promotion base in southern Xinjiang.
From a student on campus to a technical expert on the ground
After the start of the aquaculture project, Fu Ning found that aquaculture was completely foreign to the local area, and all the experience was blank, and expected and unexpected difficulties followed.
The water quality is easy to return to alkali, the temperature difference of the water temperature changes greatly, and the wild duck steals food...... In the face of a number of problems, the whole project team did not flinch, they had time to stay in the breeding base to observe, repeatedly communicate with industry experts for advice, and carefully care for these small shrimp seedlings that have migrated across thousands of miles.
"The lobster farming cycle is about five months, and there is at least one trip between the two places every month. Fu Ning recalled that after repeated experiments and demonstrations, the whole team finally decided to use 50 acres of wetland in Tumantal Township to carry out breeding experiments and base construction, guide the construction of Australian freshwater lobster breeding base, and train local wealthy leaders and young people in breeding skills.
Fu Ning also brought his students to the aquaculture project site for hands-on Xi, and organized aquaculture technology students to be stationed in Xinjiang to carry out water source testing, reclamation, pond construction and release experiments.

After more than a year of arduous exploration, overcoming technical problems such as float invasion and soil alkali return, Fu Ning's technical team finally overcame the technical problems of breeding Australian lobsters on the edge of the desert, and broke the bottleneck of shrimp farming in southern Xinjiang relying on external supply.
Hard work pays off. In October 2021, it was a harvest season. The Australian lobsters raised by the melting snow water of the Yehe River in the Kunlun Mountains have a delicious taste and no earthy smell, which is completely comparable to seafood, and the mature weight reaches 70-140 grams. It was widely welcomed by the local people, and it was sold out in less than 10 days on the market, with a price of up to 260 yuan/kg.
In 2022, Maigaiti County decided to carry out large-scale aquaculture experiments and carry out technology demonstration and promotion, that is, with the support of Shandong's Xinjiang Aid Fund, and continue to rely on the technical support of the aquaculture expert team of Rizhao Vocational and Technical College, a new standardized Australian lobster breeding experimental base of 100 acres will be built, which will open up a new channel for the local people to get rich.
