Chen Zihe, a self-styled wine immortal, a native of Pucheng, Fujian, was a painter of the "Zhejiang School" in the middle of the Ming Dynasty. Initially a plastic worker, he later changed to painting, specializing in ink figures, with a simple and energetic pen tone, and an indulgent momentum, and the commentator said that it was between Wu Wei and Guo Xu.

Chen Zihe's "Su Wu ShepherdIng" axis depicts the story of Su Wu's shepherding sheep in the snow of the Beihai during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, which belongs to the more common themes in Chinese historical figure paintings. In the painting, Su Wu's face is slightly tilted, looking obliquely at Han Ke, his sleeves are arched in front of his chest, not only supporting the joints, but also hanging a sabre at his waist. The background is dyed with light ink, the grass and old trees are barren, and the cold is compelling, setting off Su Wu's unyielding integrity. The characters, flocks, and trees and stones are all written and inked, and the facial depictions are delicate, and they do not lose their law in the unrestrained.

Chen Zihe's surviving works are rare and mostly circulated overseas, and this painting is particularly precious to this day.

The picture is selected from the "Zhejiang Museum Collection of Cultural Relics Dictionary".
