The Lucheng tragedy

Lucheng (now Yueyang) was originally an ancient county seat. On 8 November 1938, the advance unit of the Imamura Detachment of the 6th Division of the 11th Army of the Japanese Army invaded Lucheng. Six people were killed when crossing the north gate, four were hacked to death at the bridgehead, and eight outsiders were shot at the passers-by; five were assassinated and seven merchants were killed at Wangjialing; 17 boat people were brutally killed in Tangwan; and 49 innocent people were slaughtered at one time at Dingjiashan.

After the Japanese army occupied Lucheng, they demolished and burned more than 30 famous ancient buildings, including the old county government office, the examination shed, the salt warehouse, the Chunhu Academy, the Minyuan Garden, the Confucian Temple, the Qianyuan Palace, the Liu Taiwei Temple, and the Sanlu Dafu Temple.

In February 1939, more than 120 merchants who were trafficking in cotton passed through Lucheng, and the Japanese troops stationed in Lucheng insisted that they were "guerrillas" and buried them all alive; on a certain day in July, the Japanese army broke into Xianggu Harbor, burned down 25 houses, arrested 23 people, and tied them to the Chenglingji Wharf with ropes; except for Tian Yinsheng, who was kept as a boatman, 22 people were assassinated and their bodies were thrown into the Yangtze River The youngest son of the squad, father and son, were buried alive. In the autumn of 1940, the Japanese troops stationed in Yunxi retaliated for being attacked by guerrillas, and more than 20 villagers Zeng Zhaonan and Liu Zhuqing were tied up and burned alive; more than 400 people in the Chen family's mansion were massacred by the Japanese army, and only two escaped by chance; and more than 500 houses in Yunxi Town were demolished and burned down.

In the early morning of September 1943, eight people were shot dead by Japanese soldiers in the area of the intersection.

Yanjiatang tragedy

In late December 1941, after the 11th Army of the Japanese Army forcibly crossed the Xinqiang River in Yueyang, one of them invaded Yanjiatang in Jinzhou Township (now Jingzhou Township). Farmer Liang Wenhua's wife, Ho, was bedridden and died of a limb cut off by the Japanese army. Liang Siming, a lonely old man, was burned alive. Liang Qijun's wife, who was seven months pregnant, was shot dead. Liang Jiafu was stoned to death by the Japanese army with bricks. The Japanese army burned down 112 houses, robbed 57 pigs and 18 cattle.

In October 1944, the Japanese army forcibly ordered the people captured along the way to build temporary roads, demolish their houses, and build a bridge over the Shuanglong Dam in front of Yanjiatang with purlins and door panels. As soon as the bridge was built, the people in the vicinity burned it down, and took advantage of the darkness of night to destroy two temporary highways in Mijiazhuang and Qijiamen, overturning four Japanese vehicles and killing and wounding five Japanese officers and men. In an attempt to retaliate, the Japanese army arrested 167 people from more than 10 villages in this area, including Huangfuli, Panjialing, Xiaoliangchong, Xiaojiapo, Liangde Xinwu, Liangde Dawu, Xie Gongdao, Yanjiachong, Qijiamen, Yangjiajia, Nandemi, and Mijiazhuang, tied them with ropes or tied them with iron wires, and took them to Shejiapo and Mijiazhuang in Yanjiatang to be killed.

The Japanese army took pleasure in killing people, tied the villagers to trees one by one, stabbed the victim once, and did not make up for it, watching the victims convulse in pain and slowly die, and the Japanese soldiers laughed on the sidelines. The assassins, in great pain, turned their heads and bit off a large piece of the tree, some kicked the ground into a big hole with their feet, and some bent over like a bow hanging from a tree after losing their breath. The Japanese soldiers stabbed the child in the anus with a bayonet, and then raised it above his head, allowing the child to scream. In this tragedy, a total of 84 people were killed in Yanjiatang and other places, and 7 households were killed, and about 80 people were killed in Mijiazhuang and other places.

In 1943, the 11th Army of the Japanese Army built a military airport in Xinzhi Village, Lucheng City, Linxiang (now Xinzhi Village, Lucheng Town, Yueyang City). The airport covers an area of more than 1,500 acres, and the "security zone" of the airport is 5 square kilometers (there are no houses and no forests in the "security zone" stipulated by the Japanese army).

By the beginning of 1945, more than 2,100 houses in eight villages, including Xinjiadun, Baijiadun, Tujitou, Liuqianba, Shujiadun, Xiaojiadun, Pengjiadun, and Tangjiawan, had been demolished, leaving more than 5,300 people displaced and homeless. During the construction of the airport, more than 2,500 laborers were forcibly arrested, and the laborers did not comply at all, ranging from rope tying and rope to killing and feeding dogs.

According to statistics, 319 people were directly killed by the Japanese army, and 107 people died of fatigue. The Japanese army stipulated that the relatives of the laborers who had been killed were not allowed to collect their bodies, but should put them on the side of the construction site to "show the public." Every night, the dogs fight for cannibal corpses.

In July 1945, the Japanese army, desperate, frantically destroyed the airport facilities, burned charts, materials, documents, and military supplies, and blew up all the ground buildings.
