List of graduates of Lakeside University

Author: Zhong Xingyong

How many graduates of Yuezhou Hubin University have, where do they come from, and where do they work after graduation?

Yuezhou Hubin University and Hubin Middle School are on the same campus, and teacher resources, library resources, and club activity resources are shared, but the courses are different, the tuition fees are different, and the training goals are different. In terms of Christian belief, Lakeside University is "cultivating Christian leaders", and believing in Christianity is the basic threshold for admission, while Lakeside Middle School does not impose requirements.

In 1907, after Qiuxin School moved to Hubin, the school was renamed Hubin Academy, and a new academic system was stipulated: 1. 3 years for preparatory courses, 2. 4 years for junior colleges, 3. 4 years for colleges, and 4. 3 years for theology departments (later merged into Hunan Union Theological Seminary).

In the summer, Dr. Haweley and his family returned to the United States to send their children to school, raise funds for the school, and apply to the U.S. Department of Education to register with The Lakeaide School.

Lakeside undergraduate enrollment began in the spring of 1910. IN THE SAME YEAR, THE U.S. GOVERNMENT APPROVED THE REGISTRATION OF THE SCHOOL AS "HUPING CHRISTIAN COLLEGE YOCHOW CITY, HUNAN, CHINA", AND OBTAINED UNIVERSITY EDUCATION AND AWARDED A BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE. The name of the school is "Hunan Yuezhou Hubin University" in Chinese, referred to as "Hubin University" or "Hubin University".

Since the university and the secondary school share the same name, it is easy for students who graduate at Lakeside to be confused, so much so that in the course of the research, some secondary school graduates also believe that they graduated from Lakeside University. Therefore, it is necessary to classify Lakeside University students.

In December 1932, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China officially agreed to the participation of Hubin University and others in the joint establishment of Huazhong University. Spiral, Lakeside University changed its name to "Huping Agricultural Normal School". In 1931, 1933 and 1935, the Huazhong University Alumni Association conducted three alumni surveys and registered the previous graduates, among which the 1935 directory was kept in the Yueyang City Archives.

The author compares these three lists, together with the list of students published in the journal of Lakeside University, which can roughly distinguish the graduates of Lakeside University.

It can be said that in the turbulent era, communication was inconvenient, and it was all based on the investigation of Huazhong University, and it was not necessarily accurate, and even some people who worked in Yueyang, such as Fang Mingde and Guo Faqian, not only did not indicate where they went after graduation, but instead indicated that they were deceased. But it is still true overall, although there are some discrepancies between the three lists.

Because the three directories only registered graduates, some of them had studied at Hubin University but did not persist until graduation, such as Li Qu, who was persuaded to quit because they were unwilling to be baptized, and Yuan Jun and others (called Yuan Ling in the journal) entered Hubin University in 1922 to study Xi, because of their sports talent, in 1924 the school was sent to Nanjing Soochow University to study physical education, and then returned to Hubin University to teach, and coached the football team. This type of talent is also not counted.

As can be seen from the above list, in the 19 years from 1910 to 1929, Lakeside University produced a total of 47 bachelors of arts. From the perspective of known students, the rest of Hunan has the most, with 10, followed by Hubei with 8, and Yueyang with 6. After graduating, they were scattered all over the country, and most of them were engaged in education.

Why, then, do Church Universities not need to pass the college entrance examination, and why are the number of students so small that sometimes they cannot recruit students? This is a problem not only at Lakeside University, but also at all 24 Church Universities across the country. The reasons are manifold. The first is the issue of faith. It is a very difficult choice for Chinese to abandon their ancestral beliefs. The second is the high cost of tuition and miscellaneous fees, it is difficult to support the children of ordinary families, Yueyang should be close to the water, but there are not many people who go to college, and this is mainly the reason (tuition and miscellaneous fees are explained in another article), and the third is the chaos, Yueyang bears the brunt of the war, and it is difficult to study with peace of mind.

Although the undergraduate education of Hubin University is only more than 20 years, it has cultivated a group of new talents. In particular, the implementation of key training for outstanding talents, such as Lu Huilin, Guo Faqian, Yuan Ling, Yu Guifu, etc., and return to their alma mater to serve, is unique and commendable.
