On December 12, the State Administration of Radio and Television's major revolutionary historical TV series "Ask the Boundless" was broadcast on Mango TV, followed by Hunan Satellite TV. It is reported that the play focuses for the first time on the historical transformation of young Mao Zedong from an "early walker" to a "pioneer" of the Chinese revolution from 1921 to 1927, telling the story of the early communists represented by the young Mao Zedong who explored the difficult journey of China's revolutionary road with an indomitable spirit.
Adhering to the creative principle of "big things are not false, small things are not informal", the play invited Chen Jin, former deputy director of the Literature Research Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Liang Zhenhua, the chief screenwriter of the TV series "Ideal Shining in China", to serve as the chief screenwriter. The main creative team of "Asking the Boundless" began to conceive in 2021, systematically organized three collections, visited dozens of cities such as Changsha, Shaoshan, Anyuan, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Wuhan, consulted nearly 100 authoritative historical books, and had many discussions with party history experts until May 2023. In "Ask the Boundless", Mao Zedong is not a great man who points out the country as soon as he appears, and the plot makes the characters full and multifaceted through the details of young Mao Zedong's life such as winter swimming, playing football, and farming, and strives to tell the epic in a relaxed and flesh-and-blood manner.
During the filming stage, the whole drama involved 761 scenes, nearly 10,000 costumes, 54,000 props, important meetings, scenes where the main characters appeared, and key office spaces and home environments were copied and restored in accordance with historical photos.
"Asking the Boundless" is a key project of the State Administration of Radio and Television and Hunan Province, jointly produced by China Central Radio and Television, the Propaganda Department of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee, Hunan Radio, Film and Television Group (Hunan Radio and Television Station), Xiaoxiang Film Group and other units. The play is guided by the Propaganda Department of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee, planned and initiated by Hunan Radio and Television, and created, filmed, produced and distributed by Xiaoxiang Film Group and Dangran Pictures.
