Wu Yuankui

Born in 1947 in Rudong County, Nantong, Jiangsu. In 1976, he graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Nanjing University of the Arts, majoring in Chinese painting. He is currently a professor at Nanjing University of the Arts and a member of the Chinese Artists Association.

Wu Yuankui has always devoted himself to the research and creation of ancient figure painting. Almost all of his works are based on lines, and more free, stylized and rigorous line drawings are used to express the charm of the ancients. His line has the wonder of Gu Kaizhi's "spring silkworm spinning", Wu Daozi's sense of "fluttering in the wind", the beauty of Li Gonglin's "flowing clouds", and the wonder of Chen Hongshou's simple and thin strength, but in terms of line and pen and ink changes, he is more "super uplifting" and unrestrained than his predecessors, and is characterized by a large and dense line, which has a lot to do with his approach to Ren Bonian. It can be said that Wu Yuankui's paintings, from the subject matter to the spiritual style, from the modeling method to the line organization, have been influenced by Ren Bonian. The difference is that Wu Yuankui's character combination is richer, the character modeling is more magnificent, the character line drawing is more detailed, and the character scenery is more indulgent. He creatively used broad brushstrokes and large ink to dot the scene, so that the freehand mountains, rocks, flowers and trees and the delicate characters of the work and intention were contrasted and integrated, and the characters and scenery were newly combined, which was unique and emotional, forming Wu Yuankui's own face. It is especially worth mentioning that the biggest difference between Wu Yuankui and Ren Bonian is in color. Ren Bonian likes to use color, and is known for the richness and harmony of tones, bright and lyrical, while Wu Yuankui advocates ink and water, and tends to pursue the realm of elegance and simplicity. The uniqueness of Wu Yuankui's ancient figure paintings is that the use of line is constantly unfolding, the line is the carrier of his emotions, the line is the leap of his life, and the line is the lifeblood of his works. He uses lines to express the clumsiness and charm of the image, he uses lines to express the vividness and exaggeration of dynamics, he uses lines to express the structure and elegance of clothing lines, he uses lines to create an eclectic living environment, and he uses lines to express his feelings and feelings.
