Mo Kai, a veteran soldier of Huayuan to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, recalls the Battle of Shangganling

On April 12, the 70th anniversary of the 12th Army's entry into the Korean War, I visited Mo Kai, a veteran of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. Mo Kai, who participated in the Huaihai Campaign and the Battle of Crossing the Yangtze River, fought bravely, actively demanded progress, joined the party in the firing line, and then participated in the battle to liberate central and southern China and the southwest. In the battle to resist US aggression and aid Korea, he successively served as the deputy squad leader and acting squad leader of the first platoon and squad of the 34th Division of the 12th Army, the officer of the security unit of the direct political office, and the political deputy instructor and instructor of the engineer company.

After Mo Kai led a platoon of 42 soldiers to Shangganling through the blockade line, he took everyone to complete the 20-meter-long trench from No. 1 Mountain to No. 2 Mountain Position overnight, and the next day the troops were divided into 3 roads, platoon commander Wang Zhiyuan was stationed in the No. 9 mountain tunnel, deputy platoon commander Zhu Qinghe was stationed in the No. 1 mountain tunnel, Mo Kai was stationed in the No. 2 mountain tunnel, and the three squads were divided into three constructions. On the second night, they dug two new tunnels for the company command post, and continued to repair and expand the collapsed tunnels and trenches to build a barrier for the infantry to protect themselves and cover themselves. As a company deputy instructor, he often traveled back and forth to several positions to do ideological and political work.

"When we went to Shangganling, we fried it many times a day, and the water we drank was not water? It was all blood. "Shangganling is short of water, the steamed bread transported from the rear is dried up after two or three days, and you can rub up the powder in your hands, it is difficult to swallow, as the deputy instructor of the company, he often has to persuade everyone to eat more steamed bread: "Eat half of it, even if you eat one-third of a steamed bun, you still have a little nutrition, you can still save your life and insist on fighting." "The third class lives in the No. 9 tunnel, there is a big bomb crater under the No. 9 tunnel, this big bomb crater is more than 100 meters away from the No. 9 mountain tunnel, in order to get water, many soldiers go there to get water, close to the side, two hands hold the kettle stuffy, some drink and drink, pour water, a shell, and die there. Quite a few fighters died there. "What kind of water is the water we eat? It is blood water, and when there is no water to drink, you have to drink blood water! Then you have to rob it, fight with the enemy, and grab it among the enemy's shells!" Later, Mo Kai and the others found that the No. 2 tunnel was a little flooded, so they broke off a piece of the shell box, inserted it in the crack of the rock, and placed a kettle underneath, and then took it drop by drop. Because the tunnel was blown up with explosives, although the water was bitter, it was not good if you didn't eat it.

Recalling the sacrifice of Wang Keqin's heroic platoon, Mo Kai still couldn't help himself, "More than 40 people, all buried in it..." Early that morning, the enemy's B29 bombers came to bomb, and the shells just dropped on the top of No. 2 Mountain, and when they exploded, both mouths collapsed. "Mo Kai and the infantry company each arranged for four people to go in groups to pick. Due to the large rocks at the mouth of the tunnel and the enemy's artillery blockade, the rescue was very difficult, and many comrades-in-arms fell one after another, and only the engineer platoon fell six at once. Because the casualties were too large and the time had passed, there was no choice but to give up the rescue.

After the victory of the Battle of Shangganling, everyone withdrew to Gushan and passed through the army command post, the military political department sent a cultural troupe to welcome the heroes. The comrades of the art troupe shouted "welcome", and in a blink of an eye, it turned into "haha" laughter. Mo Kai and his comrades-in-arms also replied "Haha", how does it feel wrong, look at it again, it turns out that except for the two eyeballs that are turning, and the two white teeth are showing in the mouth, the whole body is black, and everyone laughs "haha".

When Mo Kai passed through Chadong during the liberation of the southwest, he built a bridge overnight for the troops to pass. The next day, before the opening, I went back to the tea cave house to see my only brother and relative, but I didn't meet it, and I entered Sichuan to participate in the war with regret, and there has been no news of my brother since then, and it has become a concern that I can't let go. When I learned the whereabouts of my younger brother in September 2014, on October 5, braving the drizzle, I climbed up the rugged and steep Zhong Fo Mountain, looking up at the three words "Mo Fengxuan" engraved in red, and the old tears were all over the place. It turned out that the younger brother heard that his brother did not find himself when he went home, and he chased the troops for a few days in Sichuan, but did not dare to find his brother, and later, he signed up to join the army, entered the Korean war, and in the anti-autumn offensive, he took over the defense of the unit with the team, and died on October 5, 1951 in Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon Province, North Korea, at the age of 17.

"Zhong Foshan's place is too narrow, and there are not many people standing to pay tribute to the martyrs, which is not convenient at all. It would be nice if we moved down, and I was going to build a park in Huaguo Mountain?" said Mo Kai, who has expressed his opinions many times. Uncle, rest assured, the Martyrs' Park is being built, and after it is built, it will be convenient for you to go to see your brother.
