Nature: Paper fraud is serious! Biomedical hard-hit areas, with a particular focus on Chinese email addresses

Researchers at Academic Data Services in London, UK, developed a machine learning software called Papermill Alarm, and analysis showed that 1.5-2% of all scientific papers published in 2022 were very similar to articles from the "paper factory", with biomedicine being the hardest hit area, rising to 3%. In response to the "paper mill", STM Integrity Hub launched a cross-publisher initiative, licensing Papermill Alarm software to detect potentially fraudulent articles. Retraction Watch, the world's largest database of retractions, recorded 44,000 retractions, of which less than 3,000 were related to the Paper Factory.
