Sex bias gene expression not only determines differences in external traits, but equally important, it also determines sex differences in drug metabolism and immune response, but its evolution and developmental process are still unclear (1, 2).

To this end, researchers such as Margarida Cardoso-Moreira of The Francis Crick Institute in the United Kingdom and Henrik Kaessmann of the University of Heidelberg in Germany have passed through the multiple developmental stages of five organs (brain, cerebellum, heart, liver and kidney) of six species (human, mouse, rat, opossum, rabbit and chicken) through bulk/ scRNA-seq et al. analyzed the sex-biased expression genes and analyzed their developmental and evolutionary dynamics, and found that the sex-biased expression genes were highly heterogeneous in different species, organs, and developmental stages, as well as the conservatism in enriched cell types (cell types with obvious sex-biased expression) (2).

Overview of the paper (2).

Furthermore, the researchers analyzed the underlying mechanisms that determine sex bias in gene expression by combining sex hormone/growth hormone response transcription factors, transcription factors of sex bias, and epigenetic status of sex bias (2).

The work was published in Science (2) on November 3, 2023.

Comment(s):

The most important and definite conclusion of this work is the heterogeneity of sex-biased expression genes in different species and organs at different developmental stages, which also highlights the importance of in-depth analysis of the expression status, mechanism, and potential functional effects of sex-biased genes at different developmental stages of human beings with richer samples and more replicates.
