The re-emergence of an old hero: Li Peijiang in the 1979 self-defense counterattack against Vietnam
In 1979, the contradictions between China and Vietnam escalated into a conflict, and the 121st Division of the 41st Army was ordered to intersperse Gao Ping to cut off the retreat and reinforcements of the Vietnamese army. In this crucial battle, Deputy Division Commander Li Peijiang was regarded as a hero by countless soldiers for his perseverance and outstanding command ability.
Li Peijiang is already a well-known old hero on the domestic battlefield. During the War of Liberation, he experienced the beacon fire several times and was injured four times, and was known as a "battlefield warrior". And on a cold winter day in 1978, he was hospitalized with gastritis. But when he learned that the troops needed him, he resolutely chose the front line regardless of his health. Some people may find it difficult to understand this kind of decision, but for Li Peijiang, protecting his family and defending the country is his original intention.
When Li Peijiang returned to the army, he first carried out a morale-boosting mobilization. He bluntly expressed his determination: "I am no longer young, but my determination is iron. I will fight side by side with you, and no hardship will shake me. On the battlefield, please test me with my battle record! These words, like a cold wind blowing, made the blood of all the soldiers boil.
The war soon began. In the midst of many difficulties, Li Peijiang led the 363rd Regiment Sharp Knife Battalion to break into the 841 Heights in Cao Ping, Vietnam. In the face of a continuous stream of enemy troops, they always held their ground, as solid as a rock. With Li Peijiang's superb command, they only sacrificed 5 soldiers, becoming a miracle in the entire campaign.
The story behind the victory is even more touching. In the predicament of the troops facing a shortage of food due to the blockage of supply lines, Li Peijiang gave all his dry food to the hungry soldiers, and he himself held his position on an empty stomach. His move moved every soldier and strengthened their confidence and determination.
After the war, Li Peijiang continued to serve in the army, and no matter where he was, he was a model in the hearts of everyone. On January 23, 2016, the legendary old hero closed his eyes forever, but his deeds will forever remain in the hearts of every Chinese soldier.
