Grassroots heroes who did not give in to the resistance against Japan: The township chief secretly sent guns to the 7th Company of the 58th Regiment of the 7th Division of the New Fourth Army led by Yang Zhen and Zhang Youdao, and braved the heavy rain to advance into the areas around Shucheng, Tongcheng, and Qianshan at the eastern foot of Dabie Mountain to open up anti-Japanese guerrilla base areas. However, like the rest of the New Fourth Army, they faced a serious shortage of guns and ammunition. Fortunately, the local people are very supportive and have contributed money and help to them. Among them, Wang Zhonglian, the pseudo-head of Dashui Township, Qianshan County, played a key role. After Wang Zhonglian heard about the plight of the New Fourth Army, he gave Yang Zhen two spears in his house.
However, Wang Zhonglian did not rest on his laurels, and he began to think about how to help them get more guns. He thought of the township office, where dozens of spears were kept. He decided to come up with an ingenious plan to secretly deliver these guns to the New Fourth Army. A few days later, Wang Zhonglian went to the station of the New Fourth Army, told Yang Zhen that he was going to the squire Ye Huiquan's house to play mahjong, and asked Yang Zhen to send someone to the township office to get a gun. That night, Yang Zhen led more than 70 soldiers quietly down the mountain and surrounded the township office.
According to Wang Zhonglian's arrangement, most of the public officials and villagers in the township office went home early from work, leaving only a few villagers to guard them. When Yang Zhen's soldiers knocked on the door and gave a secret signal, the villagers obediently opened the door. They thought they couldn't resist the incoming bandits, so they handed over the guns to Yang Zhen. The next day, Wang Zhonglian went to the township office and found that the gun had been stolen. He immediately reported to the county that the township office had been attacked by bandits. The county government reissued the guns and ammunition as soon as possible, but Wang Zhonglian took advantage of this opportunity to detain a batch of guns and ammunition several times and secretly deliver them to the New Fourth Army.
In 1943 alone, Wang Zhonglian gave Yang Zhen and others more than 60 guns and some bullets and grenades, which greatly solved their problem of gun shortage. This is a story about grassroots heroes who rose up against the invaders in the years of fire, but finally disappeared into the long river of history.
