The daytime bombing plan failed and the U.S. Air Bombers had to re-engineer their operations. When the fire was strong enough to make the B29 bombers in the sky jolt, even at high altitude, the crew could smell the scorched breath, and the wings of the aircraft were blackened by the flames.
