Social experiments that expose facts
In 1973, American psychologist David Rosenhan secretly recruited 8 people of different ages and identities in order to test the identification standards of psychiatric patients in the United States at that time, all of whom were normal social personnel without any mental illness.
Rosenhan arranged for them to be sent to different psychiatric hospitals, telling doctors that they often heard inexplicable voices and had no other symptoms. After a series of examinations and assessments, the results surprised everyone, and the 8 fake patients recruited were all diagnosed with "schizophrenia".
After the incident was exposed, major psychiatric hospitals in the United States condemned Rosenhan's "immoral" behavior and threatened: "Next time no matter how many fake patients you arrange to come in, I will definitely screen them all out for you", and Ron Hansen also responded: "In the next three months, I will arrange for fake patients to be mixed into the psychiatric hospital, I want to see if you can tell." ”
Over the next three months, psychiatric hospitals rigorously screened and tested new arrivals, and they also distributed a questionnaire to each patient, with a score of 9 to 10 indicating that the patient was certain to have a mental illness, and a score of 1 to 2 indicating that the patient was 90 percent fake.
Three months later, the mental hospitals proudly said, "We have singled out a total of 193 fake patients you arranged this time, stop your ridiculous experiments!" But Ron Hansen said: "This time I didn't arrange for anyone to blend in. ”
This social experiment pried the authority of American psychiatry at the time, and soon this experiment was known as the "Rohen Hansen experiment".
At that time, no one could explain what mental illness was, the so-called authority was the truth, and behind the truth there were countless grievances and tragic cases.
Inhumane treatment
In the mid-20th century, the United States crossed a new direction in the field of mental illness treatment because of an operation, that is, prefrontal lobectomy.
In 1935, Portuguese neurologist Moniz completed the world's first prefrontal lobectomy, by drilling a hole in the skull and then injecting anhydrous alcohol into the frontal cortex, thereby fundamentally destroying its brain tissue.
Moniz believes that disrupting the brain's connections to other parts of the brain can stop the undesirable behavior of mental illness, which has been later shown to harm other parts of the brain.
And 10 years later, Moniz pioneered a new treatment called "ice pick therapy." Simply put, an ice pick is inserted from the patient's eye socket into the brain with a hammer, and after the ice pick enters the brain, the connection between the prefrontal cortex and the thalamus is severed.
This new "ice pick therapy" is so simple and effective that it can be completed in just ten minutes without even entering the operating room, but people do not expect the pain and future cost of this operation.
Alice was the first patient to undergo "ice pick therapy," and a week after the surgery, Alice reported language difficulties, blurred vision, and emotional agitation, all of which she believed were the after-effects of the surgery.
Francis is a famous movie star in the United States in the last century, suffering from severe schizophrenia due to the pressure of work and the betrayal of his family, and then forced to do "ice pick therapy", once had dementia, gibberish and other symptoms, until she was forty years old and the symptoms gradually lessened.
According to the research data at the time, a total of 450,000 patients in more than 500 hospitals had been subjected to "ice pick therapy", and more than 70% of them had suffered from a series of symptoms such as brain infection, cognitive impairment, language disorder, and personality sluggishness.
And it is such a cruel treatment that actually won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1949. It wasn't until 25 years later that a movie called "One Flew Over the Madhouse" brought the past facts to the screen.
In fact, until now, no one has been able to fully interpret the word "psychopath", no one knows what those so-called mental patients think, we should live as optimistically as those people every day instead of worrying about the future.
