At 7:45 p.m. local time on October 3, a tour bus loaded with 40 tourists to the campsite fell from an overpass and caught fire, killing at least 21 people, including two children, and injuring 18 others.
Venice city councillor Renato Borasso said the driver, a 40-year-old Italian and one of the victims, had been ill before the crash.
There were reports that the bus, powered by methane, fell off a viaduct about 15 meters high and touched a power line and caught fire, disrupting the railway line between Mestre and Venice.
Local rescue forces have extinguished the fire, and the cause of the accident has yet to be ascertained. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedossi said methane was a factor aggravating the accident and the death toll could rise.
