In the spring of this year (2023), when we sell second-hand ThinkPad T480s, we sometimes encounter such a situation: a certain T480s, ash for silicone grease, roaster temperature 90+, open the browser web page and the fan starts to run, so replace several so-called Taobao new cooling fans (generally the executive members will inform the customer if they register to replace the fan module), change the silicone grease, the oven is still 90+, or whatever program the fan will start to run.
However, the same batch of machines collected, most of the ash cleaning and changing silicone grease after the roaster is only 60-70 degrees, open the browser is not insensitive, need a high CPU usage rate to start the fan to work.
Even if the fan of the same batch of machines with normal oven temperature is borrowed to test the oven, the temperature is still abnormal, which eliminates the problem of fans.
This situation for a long time I couldn't understand what's going on, and even once suspected that I bought fake 7868 silicone grease, and then repeatedly verified the test, determined that there was no problem with the silicone grease, I didn't think about this matter more, I think it may be that some CPU processors are physically gifted, and they can only be temporarily classified as metaphysical events, so I didn't pay much attention.
Then I went to Guangdong to be mainly responsible for recycling American version machines, and I didn't recover many T480s during that time, so I forgot about it by chance.
In the summer of May, a colleague in Kunshan told me that a customer bought a T480s, and after getting it, he reflected that the fan always rotated, and the temperature was casually 90 degrees, and they couldn't solve it, so they asked me what to do.
This time, you can't take chances, in other words, you have to bite the bullet and solve the problem.
【What happened】
The situation reflected by the guest is: open the browser web page, do not hang anything else in the background, the fan begins to sound, open Master Lu to see, the CPU temperature has been 90 degrees, the guest hopes to try not to make the fan sound, the computer temperature is not high.
Unfortunately, the first time I helped the guest solve the problem remotely, I didn't solve it, and finally just found a fooling way - limiting the turbo frequency, and the guest also knew that it was a fooling method, but it still gave praise, which is well deserved.
I'll make a long story short, I won't describe the process, just say the result, I tried: adjusting the battery to the maximum battery life mode, adjusting the maximum CPU performance release to 99% (in fact, turning off the turbo function), and ThrottleStop limiting the power consumption released by the maximum performance, and upgrading the BIOS.
None of them solve the problem.
Either it doesn't work (battery mode tuning), performance doesn't work (turn off turbo), or reboot or reboot and you have to reset it (ThrottleStop). As for the BIOS, unlike the X390, this time it has nothing to do with it at all, it was I who got it wrong.
But when I experimented with the customer remotely, I found the problem: with aide64, the customer's T480s, when the oven, can last for a long time at the level of 44W, close to half an hour of the oven, only dropped 25W, more than 1 hour, only dropped to 15W, but a T480s compared by my side, the oven instantly 25W, soon (within 2 minutes) dropped to 15W, and then stabilized at the level of 13-14W for a long time.
Before this, I knew PL1 and PL2, but I didn't know that low-voltage U can also be adjusted, and my level of understanding of computer hardware and software can only be said to be the level of a large enthusiast.
However, during the period, the guests themselves asked whether they could solve this problem with XTU? He saw a turkey article a long time ago in Zhihu, which used XTU tuning parameters to test the extreme performance of the 8th generation Core. I tried it and found that the version of the official website did not work, and I downloaded a few elsewhere but still could not run, so I told the guest that it did not work, maybe it used before, but now I can't get it, and I can't find the historical version of the software.

During the period, I also saw some articles about XTU, I think XTU may provide the last solution, but I found several versions of XTU on the Internet, either the processor does not support it, or the fake XTU software is really rogue software.
This matter is so deadlocked, the guests will also use, use more software, all installed once is also difficult, because the guest can not stop working and can not care about the exchange. 【Introduction of Intel XTU】
XYU stands for Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, and I've always wondered why it's not called Intel ETU, it's called XTU.
This was originally a tool for overclocking to further release the power sealed by those performance beasts, but reverse is used to limit the performance release of laptops, which is quite useful.
At present, the version hanging on the official website can only be used for desktop processors with K and HK processors that can be overclocked in laptops, and low-voltage U cannot be used. After downloading it, the installation will prompt what error, and then there is no solution, I was not dead at first, tried various win10 versions, and finally determined that the XTU version of the official website directly canceled the support for low-voltage U.

【Final solution】
The turning point came in late July, when I was visiting Zhihu, I saw an article by an author who said that he installed XTU for a thin and light book of the 8th generation low-voltage processor to unlock the performance release. The author also mentioned that he first downloaded XTU on the XTU official website, and found that the new version no longer supports the 8th generation of low-voltage processors, and he found a working XTU installation package after several turns.
I was overjoyed, followed the Baidu network disk link posted by the author to download the XTU installation package, and then found a few T480s to try, and finally it can be successfully run, but also a wish.
With that, I also found out why some T480s have abnormal fever.
The reason is simple.
Because the heat dissipation capacity of T480s, in the ThinkPad 2018 model is a level of the same door, so the performance release can be very high, most T480s is PL1 set 25W, PL2 set 15W, but these ash cleaning for silicone grease, even replace the heat dissipation module can not reduce the temperature of the machine, the probability PL1 and PL2 setting is double 44W, if only one is 44, but it is not particularly serious, this is the reason why the body is 90 degrees +, almost without exception.
Like the following, the Turbo Boost Power Max and Turbo Short Boost Power Max are both 44W settings, and the heat is often more than 90 degrees and the fan does not stop, which is almost inevitable.
