Qilian County, located in the "northern gate" of Qinghai, is one of the places where the Red West Road Army fought bloody battles on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. With their fearless heroism and revolutionary spirit, countless revolutionary martyrs and patriots threw their heads and shed their blood for the free liberation of the Chinese nation and all mankind, and composed a heroic hymn of unswerving determination and death-defying in the majestic Qilian Mountains.
In the dense forest under the Zall Mountain in Qilian County and on the bank of the Babao River, the Memorial Garden of the Second Army of the Red Army of the Red Army in the West Road, as a red paradise, stands quietly here, through the four seasons of Qilian, leisurely telling the stories of the heroes. The tall and majestic Heroes Monument with a total height of 19.36 meters symbolizes the historical time coordinates of the Western Route Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army's western expedition to the Hexi Corridor in November 1936 and after more than half a year of arduous struggle, crossing the Qilian Mountains to the Xingxing Gorge, welcoming the dawn of the revolution and returning to the embrace of the Party.
Looking back 86 years ago, in the spring of 1937, it was an extraordinary era, and the Military and Political Committee of the Hongxi Road Army held its last enlarged meeting of the Military and Political Commission in Hongshi Wo, surrounded by peaks. On the day of the meeting, Li Xiannian, Li Zhuoran, and Cheng Shicai led the left detachment into the Qilian Mountains at an altitude of 4,000 meters with the indomitable spirit of the Chinese communists.
In March, it is the coldest time of the year in the Qilian Mountains, which stretches 800 kilometers from east to west, and the Qilian Mountains are majestic and precipitous, but in this desperate world of ice and snow, there is a red flag that does not fall, there is a red army team that is ragged, full of war wounds, hungry and thin, and still has no confidence in the future.
After entering the Qilian Mountains, the left detachment overcame the unbearable difficulties and dangers of ordinary people, and during the march of more than 40 days, they walked in ice and snow every day, slept in ice caves night and night, had no water or salt, and could only eat belts and drink snow water.
After that, the left detachment of the Red West Road Army led by Li Xiannian and Li Zhuoran broke through the siege of Ma Bufang's army and entered the area of Huangfan Temple (now Qilian Huangzang Temple), followed by the enemy Ma Yuanhai, and at the confluence of the Heihe and Babao Rivers, the left detachment fought fiercely with them and then advanced westward. They traveled south along the Heihe and Bison Gully Gorges over Hot Water Osaka, and traveled west through the Tolle and Shule River valleys to Xingxingxia (the junction of Gansu and Xinjiang).
The Battle of Huangfansi was the first victory won by the Red Western Route Army under the direct leadership of Li Xiannian after suffering heavy losses in the Qilian Mountains, which dealt a heavy blow to the enemy's arrogance, boosted morale, completely got rid of the enemy's pursuit, replenished the troops, and laid the foundation for the left detachment to continue its westward march out of the ice and snow Qilian Mountains.
From October 1936 to May 1937, the Western Route Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army fought in Hexi to open up the "international route", and finally defeated Qilian Mountain because it was outnumbered. With the spirit of fearless revolutionary heroism, they lasted 197 days, traveled thousands of miles, annihilated more than 20,000 enemies, and played a rousing heroic symphony with blood and life.
From September 1949 to October 1952, in order to advance into Xinjiang and liberate the northwest, the Second Army and the Third Army of the First Field Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army were frozen to death due to sudden climate changes and were buried in the Qilian Mountains.
On the land of Qilian, the remnants of the Red West Road Army wrote heroic poems that dared to face strong enemies and overcome difficulties and dangers. Under the circumstances of extreme hardship and the strength of the enemy, the Red Army of the Western Road always maintained the revolutionary integrity of fighting the enemy to the end and preferring to die unyielding, and the heroic spirit of persisting in the revolution without fear of hardships and dangers, and wrote the infinite loyalty of the communists to the party, the country, and the people.
In the exhibition hall of the Second Army Memorial Garden of the People's Liberation Army of the West Road Army in Qilian County, one historical material, one object after another, and the portraits of martyrs seem to "live", and the voices and smiles of martyrs are like "stars in the long night", shining in the long night, illuminating the darkness, and making the light of faith shine. Vivid stories have witnessed heroes and martyrs using the hottest blood to light up the road ahead for thousands of people.
