According to Greek media reports, the price of 14 foods such as beef, cheese and fruit in Greece has risen more than the average of the euro area in recent days.
According to Eurostat, inflation in the entire eurozone market was 10.2%, while Greece had food inflation of 10.8% in August, ranking 7th out of 19 countries in the Eurozone.
Meat
From April 2022, beef prices have risen by double digits for 17 consecutive months. In August, the price of beef in the Greek market rose by 11.1%, compared to 5.4% in the Eurozone. Greek veal prices rose the second largest among eurozone countries, followed by Cyprus with a 16.5% increase.
Pork prices in the Eurozone rose by 8.8% in August, while those in Greece rose by 14.8%, ranking fourth.
Lamb prices rose by 8% in Greece that month, the third highest among eurozone countries, with the average price of lambs and goats rising by 5.8%.
The only meat that did not rise significantly in August was chicken, whose prices rose by only 1%, compared with a corresponding increase of 4.1% in the euro area.
In the case of meat, the overall price of the Greek market rose by 9.7% in August, while the Eurozone market rose by 7.4%.
Milk
In the dairy category, with the exception of yogurt, the Greek market has a higher price growth rate than the Eurozone, with an overall growth rate of 11.9%, compared to 10.6% in the Eurozone. Fresh milk grew by 6.3 percent, compared to 5.4 percent in the euro area.
According to the Competition Commission, Greece is one of the most expensive countries in the EU for fresh milk. According to the Hellenic Institute of Statistics, retail prices of fresh milk increased by 2% in August alone compared to July. In contrast, Greek yoghurt prices rose by 9.3% in August, compared to 11.2% in the Eurozone.
Cheese and eggs
The Greek market had the third highest increase in cheese prices in the Eurozone, rising at double-digit rates for 18 consecutive months. Greek cheese prices rose by 15.4% in August, compared to 11.4% in the Eurozone.
Egg prices have also been rising at double-digit rates over the past 16 months, with Greek egg prices rising by 14.3% in August, compared to 9.6% in the Eurozone.
Vegetables and fruits
Vegetable prices in Greece rose the lowest in the Eurozone at 8.2% in August, but have been higher since September.
Before Hurricane Daniel hit Greece, wholesale prices of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers rose 75 percent. According to statistics from the Central Market and Fisheries Agency, the wholesale price of domestically produced tomatoes was 0.9 euros per kilogram on September 4, while on September 14 it reached 1.5 euros per kilogram, an increase of 66.7%. The price of imported tomatoes also increased, reaching 1.5 euros per kilogram on September 14. Cucumbers rose from 40 cents on September 4 to 45 cents, and on September 14 to 70 cents. Peppers rose from €0.9 to €1 per kilogram.
Greek fruit prices also rose by 10.6% in August, while Eurozone fruit prices rose by 8.1%.
olive oil
Vegetable oil prices in Greece rose by 12.1% in August, while prices in the Eurozone market rose by 8.4%. Although the price increase of olive oil was lower than the eurozone by 38.3%, it was still as high as 23.5%. (Seinfino)
