Zhong Hui ordered Li Fu to besiege Lecheng, Xun Kai to besiege Seoul, and he himself led his troops directly to Yang'an Pass. On how to hold yang'an pass, the opinions of the general Fu You and the deputy general Jiang Shu were divided. Jiang Shu believed that he should not be able to hold out, but Fu You thought that he could use Zhong Hui to launch a surprise attack when he was unstable, and if he did not hold out, the situation in Seoul in Lecheng would be more critical.
When the two were arguing, they suddenly got that Wei Jun had come to Guanxia. Fu You ordered Jiang Shu to stay in Guannei and himself led three thousand soldiers and horses to fight against the Wei army. Not long after the start of the war, Zhong Hui led his troops to retreat, Fu You was in hot pursuit, the Wei army regrouped and launched a counterattack against Fu You, Fu You saw that the situation was unfavorable and prepared to withdraw to Guannei, but suddenly found that Yang'an Pass had raised the banner of the Wei army, and it turned out that Jiang Shu had surrendered to Zhong Hui. Fu You was furious and engaged in a deadly struggle with the Wei army, where he was seriously wounded and killed himself.
The war mentioned in the novel did occur in history. According to the relevant biography of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, after the Battle of Shu began, Zhong Hui led 120,000 troops from the Xie Valley and Luo Valley on the East Road to attack Hanzhong directly, but did not encounter effective resistance from the Shu army on the way, and soon entered the Hanzhong region. Subsequently, Zhong Hui ordered the protector Xun Kai and the former general Li Fu to lead 10,000 troops to launch a siege on Seoul and Lecheng respectively, and then attacked another defensive stronghold of Shu Han in the Hanzhong region, Jinjin, and led the main force to attack Yang'an pass.
Originally, Zhong Hui thought that the strength of Hancheng, Lecheng, and Jincheng was only a few thousand people, and it would be easy for him to take the three cities with double his strength, but he unexpectedly received a battle report on the way to Yang'an Pass: Xun Kai and Li Fu were still unable to occupy Seoul and Lecheng after a bitter battle, and the gold stood still under the insistence of Liu Yin, the governor of Shu Han, and the three cities were still under the control of Shu Han. Zhong Hui immediately returned to his army to personally attack Seoul and Lecheng, continuing to besiege Jinwei with some troops, and at the same time sending an escort Army Hu Lie to lead an attack on Yang'an Pass. Therefore, the historical Battle of Yang'anguan was not participated in by Zhong Hui, but was commanded by hu lie, an escort.
At this time, the defenders of Zhenshouyang Anguan would be Fu You, the governor of Shu Han Guanzhong, and Jiang Shu, the governor of Wuxing, with a garrison of about 20,000 troops. However, Jiang Shu, one of the generals, the governor of Wuxing, had long been dissatisfied with Shu Han and planned to go out of the city and surrender after learning of the Wei army's invasion. Therefore, Jiang Shu offered to go out to engage the Wei army. Fu You believed that the Wei army was strong and could not be won in a frontal battle, and tried to prevent Jiang Shu from fighting. However, Jiang Shu insisted on his own opinion, and Fu Youjian could not stop it, so he had to let Jiang Shu out of the customs. After Jiang Shu left Yang'anguan, he came to Yinping to surrender to the Wei army, and then took Hu Lie to attack Yang'anguan. Fu You was unfortunately killed in battle, and not only did the city fall, but a large amount of military food stored in the city also fell into the hands of Hu Lie. With the loss of Yang'an Pass, Hanzhong's gateway to Chengdu was opened.
Speaking of fu you, the defender who was martyred in this battle, he was originally the son of fu Wei, a fierce general of the Shu Han Dynasty. During the Battle of Yiling, Fu Wei participated in the battle as a viceroy, and during the fiasco of Yiling, he used liu bei as a cover to block the Eastern Wu army, and eventually died on the battlefield. Fu You joined the Shu Han clique as an adult and was appointed Zuo Zhonglang (左中郎), and later promoted to Governor of Guanzhong. So, where is Yang'anguan, the place where this war broke out? In fact, there is a name for this place, I believe everyone knows very well, Yang'an Pass is actually Yangping Pass, which was the place where Zhang Lu and Cao Cao, the separatist forces of Hanzhong, fought a decisive battle between Zhang Lu and Cao Cao during the Battle of Hanzhong, and was also one of the main battlefields in the confrontation between the famous Shu Han general Huang Zhong and the famous Cao Wei general Xiahou Yuan during the Battle of Hanzhong. Yang'an Pass is the village of Lianshui in Wuhou Town, four kilometers west of the city of Mian county in present-day Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province.
Yang'an Pass is the beginning of the Hanzhong Basin, surrounded by mountains on three sides, about two kilometers wide from north to south, bordering Qinling Mountains in the north, Han River and Bashan Mountain in the south, Zhanglucheng across the river in the west, and Dingjun Mountain and Tiandang Mountain in an angle, which is the gateway to the Hanzhong Basin and the main road to Luoyang and Gansu. Once Yang'an passed, the gate of Hanzhong was opened. This is why the Shu Han court would guard this pass with 20,000 heavy troops.
