The fuel surcharge for airline tickets will be raised sharply for the second time this year, close to the level at the end of last year.

On August 30, the reporter learned from a number of OTA platforms that it received oral notices from China Eastern Airlines, Qingdao Airlines and other airlines that from September 5, 2023 (ticket issuance date), adult passengers: 60 yuan fuel surcharge per passenger on routes below 800 kilometers (inclusive), and 110 yuan fuel surcharge per passenger on routes over 800 kilometers.

In order to reduce the risk of jet fuel price fluctuations to a certain extent and protect the operation of airlines, airlines can independently determine the standard for collecting passenger fuel surcharges on domestic routes within the specified range. Previously, relevant aviation personnel told reporters that the fuel surcharge collection of domestic routes adopts a linkage mechanism with the price of aviation kerosene, and each airline will adjust accordingly due to oil price fluctuations.

The adjustment is the second increase in fuel surcharges since 2023, up 30/50 yuan from last month, and close to 60/120 yuan at the end of last year. Passengers who need to travel in September can save 30/50 yuan on the fuel surcharge of 30/50 yuan if they book tickets 5 days in advance.

From August 5 last year, after many months of raising the fuel surcharge standard for domestic flights, it was lowered to 80 yuan/140 yuan. Immediately after September 5 last year, the fuel surcharge was lowered for the second time last year, adjusted to 60 yuan/120 yuan. From January 5 this year, the fuel surcharge will be lowered for the first time in the new year, adjusted to 40 yuan/80 yuan. From April 5, it will be adjusted to 30 yuan/60 yuan. From June 5, it will be adjusted to 20 yuan/30 yuan. In the continuous downward adjustment, from August 5 this year, it ushered in the first increase, adjusted to 30/60 yuan. From September 5, it will be raised again to 60 yuan/110 yuan.

On February 5 last year, airlines resumed collecting fuel surcharges on domestic routes, which are divided into two levels: 10 yuan and 20 yuan. Since then, the fuel surcharge has continued to increase every month until August 5 last year. Among them, after the collection standard was raised again on July 5 last year, the fuel surcharge rose to 100 yuan/200 yuan, which is the highest collection standard since the mainland began to collect fuel surcharges in 2000.
