We have received many applications one after another, and the students' scientific research projects are rich and fascinating. We will select six seeded contestants and share their research projects and scientific stories in three tweets.

In the first two issues, Liu Sichen and Fan Yijun, based on life, used the knowledge they learned to solve real-world problems; Wang Qixuan and Wu Yihui, starting from their interests, explore the world with science as a method. The seeded players we recommend today are Wang Jialin from Shenzhen Middle School and Wu Jingxi from Shanghai Middle School. They love science, fear science, and persistently study science, so let's take a look at their latest research projects and scientific stories~

Wang Jialin

Visual positioning technology in 2D scenes

Robot vision positioning technology is designed to enable robots to determine their position and posture based on visual information, and to accurately perceive the three-dimensional structure and object properties of the surrounding environment. In recent years, many excellent open source works on visual SLAM (just-in-time localization and map construction) technology are mainly a monocular camera-based SLAM system, which uses methods such as feature extraction and loopback detection to achieve real-time localization and map construction. However, they all have a problem—errors occur after multiple loops, and even loopback detection cannot completely eliminate each accumulated error.

At present, there is no perfect research on visual positioning/repositioning technology for 2D scenes, and Wang Jialin wants to solve this problem. His project aims to study visual and wheel speedometer-based positioning schemes in two-dimensional indoor scenes. He first put forward the project conjecture, then consulted papers and materials, and asked the teacher for advice; After the idea is confirmed, I go to the lab to start programming and testing. Finally, the data obtained by Wang Jialin with the experimental results was very close to the data calculated by the formula, and the map and repositioning drawn were also in line with the experimental expectations, which verified the effectiveness of the visual loopback correction algorithm proposed by him and proved the accuracy and advantages of his algorithm in 2D scenes.

Wu Jingxi

Student's home online class assistance system

In previous years, the school adopted the method of online learning for students to take online classes at home. However, because teachers cannot "supervise" students at all times as they do in the classroom, some students are prone to lack of concentration in class, and the teaching effect of online classes has caused concern among parents and teachers. Based on this, Wu Jingxi designed and developed a set of student home online class assistance system, using the current image recognition technology to realize real-time judgment of the status of students during online class, students wander during learning, the system can carry out corresponding voice reminders, timely intervention, improve the learning efficiency of students' online classes.

This system, through the analysis of facial features and sitting posture, realizes the judgment of students' online class status, can remind students in time, and improve learning efficiency; At the same time, the system provides blacklist management, supervises students playing online video games, and restricts students' bad behavior. The system does not have high requirements for the performance of the computer running the program, and most of the computers used by students at home can run the program, which has good promotion value.

Science has become something etched into the bones

| I enjoy the free and quiet atmosphere in the lab

Wang Jialin loves science. Since childhood, he has been passionate about exploring the world around him, and in the eyes of adults, he loves to toss. At that time, smartphones and artificial intelligence were not hot topics, he was very interested in robots, for a long time, especially wanted to go to MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to see Kismet (an early humanoid robot, with visual, auditory, tactile input, position sensing, can interact with people through dialogue, expression, posture, etc.). Wong's love of science goes far beyond applied technology, he also wonders why stars glow, explores the trajectory of raindrops, and tries to study the principle of television. Of course, under the accumulation and hands-on ability at that time, it basically became some kind of "adventure".

His curiosity about the unknown planted a seed of science in Wang Jialin's heart, and his passion for science grew as he grew older and came into contact with more complex and novel worlds and knowledge. Among them, he was most fascinated by physics and computers. He invested a lot of energy, enthusiasm and time in learning these two subjects, and gradually physics and computers became a part of his life. He enjoys the freedom and quiet of the lab, often spending the whole day.

At school, Wang Jialin founded the artificial intelligence club. As president, he is not only responsible for organizing various activities, but also leading members to explore the cutting-edge knowledge of artificial intelligence. They held lectures and invited industry experts to share the latest development of artificial intelligence, opening a window to future technology for students. In addition, they also organize coding competitions to stimulate students' interest in learning programming and problem solving. During his time as president, he learned how to organize events, coordinate resources, and improve his presentation and communication skills. Most importantly, Wang Jialin's love and expertise for computers has gradually deepened.

In the scientific research projects of the robot laboratory, Wang Jialin actively participated in the design, programming and testing of visual positioning. He gradually learned how to enable robots to move autonomously in complex environments and record course routes, eventually mapping and loopback detection. Although he is still a novice in the field of scientific research, under the guidance of mentors and laboratory members, he constantly overcomes difficulties and explores step by step.

| From toy frog to AI visual analysis

Wu Jingxi remembers that when he was a child, his grandmother bought him a toy frog, and this toy frog has a characteristic that when the hand moves above its head, the sound of "frog frog" will automatically occur, and it will be accompanied by the beating of the legs. He was curious, how could there be a reaction if he didn't touch it at all? This problem bothered him for a long time, and finally learned that it was because of the light sensor, which can convert the change in light and darkness into a change in electrical signal, which causes the toy frog to react. This one is amazing.

As he grew older, Wu fell in love with programming, he was familiar with Python and was interested in the field of visual analysis in current artificial intelligence. After the start of online classes a few years ago, the efficiency of students in class generally decreased. He learned that the visual analysis technology in artificial intelligence can realize the analysis and extraction of face status feature information, and guessed that if the characteristics of class distraction and normal class characteristics are distinguished from the face features, it can automatically remind students in real time and improve the quality of everyone's class. Later, with the support of the teacher, he began to study the project, experienced various setbacks, and finally with unremitting efforts, the project experiment was successful, and won the honor of Shanghai Million Youth Tomorrow's Science and Technology Star.

From the little frog of light-driven toys in childhood, to the current artificial intelligence visual analysis, information is obtained from the change of light and dark. This made Wu Jingxi not only feel the beauty of natural light, but also experience the charm of the light of science and technology!

They love science, fear it, and are willing to persevere in its research. No matter what direction they pursue in the future, science has become something etched in their bones, allowing them to see the world objectively and dialectically.

Solving the problem "Earth 2.0 Project"

Science has become something etched in the bones | 2023 "Science T Conference" audition outstanding works selection

For the thinking of the three "challenging problems", Wang Jialin and Wu Jingxi both gave their own "problem-solving" ideas for the "Earth 2.0 Project".

Wang Jialin believes that the environmental transformation of Mars is divided into two steps, the first step is the formation of the ecosystem, and the second step is the formation of the Earth's environment. The so-called formation of ecosystems is the formation of an oxygen-free biosphere on the surface of Mars in a barren land. To form an oxygen-free biosphere, Mars must have sufficient liquid water, the ultraviolet rays reaching the surface of Mars should be greatly reduced, and the oxygen and nitrogen content in the atmosphere should gradually increase.

In the formation stage of the earth's environment, the first step is to introduce microorganisms on Earth on Mars, and the first microorganisms introduced must be photoautotrophic organisms, which can use sunlight as energy; The second step is to plant plants that convert carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere into oxygen; The third step is to plant plants and propagate animals in large quantities, and biodiversity is extremely important to ensure the stability of the Martian biosphere; Finally, when a large number of immigrants settle on Mars, human production and life will accelerate the transformation of the Martian environment, so that Mars will truly become a second home for mankind.

Wu Jingxi believes that in order to transform Mars into a second home, humans need to achieve the following work: research and development of large launch vehicles to transport humans from Earth to Mars; Build interstellar transport stations to achieve transportation between Earth and Mars; establishment of energy supply stations; search for water resources on Mars and establish water supply stations; Realize the manufacture and use of AI robots on Mars; Establish a joint command room, carry out overall construction planning and coordinate and command all parties; Build a closed ecological environment suitable for human habitation; Realize the normal use of 3D printers in the Martian gravity field environment; Local production of tools, equipment and robotic components on Mars.
