The project is an important part of Guangdong Province's "five vertical and five horizontal" water resources allocation backbone network, with an estimated total investment of 10.118 billion yuan, a total length of about 71.65 kilometers of water transmission lines, a total construction period of 40 months, and is expected to be completed in early 2026. After completion, it will increase the water supply of more than 8.5 million people in eastern Guangdong by an average of 311 million cubic meters per year, effectively improve the water supply capacity and emergency water supply capacity in eastern Guangdong, and form a water supply guarantee system that adjusts abundant and dry sources, complements multiple water sources and uses them sustainably.

The reporter learned that there are a total of 14 slurry balance shield machines in the project, of which the "Yuedong No. 5" shield machine is bored from the GX07 working shaft to the GX06 working shaft, and the tunnel length is about 2100 meters; The "Guangdong East 8" shield boring machine is responsible for the boring of the shield section between GX09 and GX10, with a tunnel length of about 2383 meters; "Guangdong East 12" was sent from GX14 working shaft to GX13 working shaft, with a tunnel length of about 1177 meters; All three tunnels will be completed in 2024.

"Yuedong No. 5" will pass through strongly weathered argillaceous siltstone, fractured rock, and strongly weathered feldspar quartz sandstone formations during underground excavation; During the excavation of "Yuedong No. 8" and "Yuedong No. 12", they will pass through silt soil, medium coarse sand layer and other formations. According to the strata of different shield sections, the three shield machines have been specially designed in terms of cutterhead structure, tool selection, super digging cutter, cutterhead wear resistance, cutterhead mud cake, etc., so that they can meet the propulsion requirements.

"We took four measures against difficult formations. First, advance exploration, have an advance understanding of the formation; The second is to hold an expert meeting and select a tool suitable for this formation boring for the shield machine; The third is to carry out a synchronous grouting and secondary grouting control during the shield boring process to avoid ground subsidence; The fourth is to stop and check before crossing important buildings to ensure a safe and smooth crossing. Xu Sheng, project manager of Construction 4 Standard, said that during the shield boring process, the shield body attitude, tool management, and excavation parameters will be controlled according to the different formations entered by the shield, and the geological supplementary survey work will be strengthened; Through multiple means to find out the nature, characteristics and scope of bad geology, improve the efficiency of excavation and slag, and make targeted adjustments of shield boring equipment to ensure the safety of shield boring construction and the quality of forming tunnels.

In the underground boring construction, the whole process of the shield boring machine will be strictly controlled, and the technical staff will correctly issue each shift boring instruction according to various exploration and measurement data information such as geological changes, tunnel burial depth, ground load, surface settlement, shield machine attitude, cutterhead torque, jack thrust, etc., and track and adjust in time. At the same time, each project department has also established a shield construction remote information management system, including shield construction information monitoring system and video surveillance system.
