At the beginning of the year, he reached the final again in Sydney, but lost to Sabatini and missed out on the title. In the final, he lost to Owang by two 1-6 scores, and also stopped in the semifinals, losing two 2-6 to Sales.

His women's doubles partner Martinez won the silver medal and lost to the Fernandez duo in the final. He lost to Celeth in the semifinals in Los Angeles, but achieved revenge in the final in Montreal and claimed his second singles title. He swept Davenport in the second round of the US Open, defeated Graff in the quarterfinals and Manuela Malieva in the semifinals to reach the US Open final for the first time, but eventually lost to Seles by two 3-6 to finish as runner-up.

He lost to Naflatilova in the semifinals in Feuerstatt, defeated Sabatini in the semifinals in Philadelphia and lost to Budi Graf in the final. He stopped reaching the quarterfinals of the year-end finals and lost to Nila Laratinova.

In doubles, he has an impressive record of 70 wins and 10 losses, and has won 10 women's doubles titles, including the Olympic Open. He also won his second mixed doubles title at the French Open.
