The film tells the story of a man who was born like an old man, who became younger and younger as he turned back time, and the love story between him and a woman who grew up normally across time and space.
The story of the film begins when Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans in 2005, when a dying old woman, Daisy (Cate Blanchett), asks her daughter Caroline (Julia Ormond) to read a diary for her. This diary chronicles the life of a man named Benjamin Patton (Brad Pitt). Benjamin was born in 1918 as old and sick as an 85-year-old, his mother died in a difficult birth, and his father, Thomas (Jason Fleming), unable to accept the freak, abandoned him at the door of a nursing home. Fortunately, he was killed by a black female caregiver, Quinnie (Taraji M. P. Hansen) adopted and became her adopted son. In the nursing home, Benjamin met many elderly people, and they told him their own stories and experiences, which filled him with curiosity and imagination about the world.
In 1930, Benjamin meets a little girl named Daisy (Ellie Finning), the granddaughter of an elderly woman in a nursing home, who dreams of becoming a ballerina. Benjamin and Daisy saw each other and became good friends. They play, learn, dance and accompany each other. Over time, Benjamin's body begins to grow young and strong, while Daisy gradually grows into adulthood. Their relationship also changed from friendship to love, but they could not be together because of their opposite physiological changes.
In 1936, Benjamin left the nursing home to become a sailor on a tug called the Cocks. He travels the world with Captain Mike Clark (Jared Harris) and sees different customs. In Murmansk, Russia, he has a brief romance with a married Englishwoman, Elizabeth Albert (Titan Swindon). During World War II, he participated in the salvage of shipwrecks and witnessed the brutality and death of war. In a firefight with a German submarine, he lost all his crew and friends, and he survived alone.
In May 1945, Benjamin returned to New Orleans and reunited with Daisy (Cate Blanchett). By this time, Benjamin had become a mature man in his 50s, while Daisy was a successful ballerina. The love between them is rekindled, but they are unable to be together because Daisy already has a boyfriend. Benjamin left Daisy and began a period of affair. Soon after, he received an invitation from his father Thomas and learned of his background. Thomas, who had already developed cancer, handed over his 140-year-old family business, the button factory, to Benjamin, apologizing and saying goodbye. Benjamin attends Thomas' funeral with Quinnie.
In the spring of 1962, Benjamin returned to New Orleans to find that Daisy had also returned. At this time, Benjamin had become a young man in his 30s, while Daisy was a middle-aged woman in her 40s. It turned out that after a performance, Daisy suffered a car accident that caused her to no longer be able to dance. Benjamin comforted and encouraged her to start a new life. The two finally decided to let go of the past and the future, cherish the present, and live together.
