When Fan Zhongyan was studying, his family was very poor.
There was no money to rent a house, so he had to stay in the temple.
There was no money to buy vegetables, so he used millet to boil porridge, and when the porridge solidified overnight, he cut it into four pieces with a knife, and ate two pieces in the morning and two pieces in the evening to satisfy his hunger.
Such a day, Fan Zhongyan, is a full three years.

When Fan Zhongyan was young, he also had a hard time.
When he was two years old, his father died.
His mother was unable to raise him, so she took him to remarry a family surnamed Zhu, and he changed his surname to "Zhu".
When Fan Zhongyan grew up, he knew his background, and his heart was painful.
Determined to change back to his surname, he said goodbye to his mother in tears and embarked on a hard road to study.
At Yingtian Academy, he got up every day before dawn to read, and he also read late at night before going to bed.
When he was sleepy from reading, he washed his face with cold water; When he was hungry, he drank porridge to his stomach.
The students in the dormitory saw that he was eating too cold, so they specially brought him a large table of food to improve the food.
Unexpectedly, Fan Zhongyan decisively refused, and said:
If you eat these delicious dishes, I will not adapt to the hard days, you better take it back.
During those most difficult days, he stayed in poverty and refused to enjoy.
It was precisely with this kind of heart that he was able to win the imperial examination in one fell swoop and realize his long-cherished wish.

Endure the difficulty
Su Shi said: Those who set up great things in ancient times not only have supernatural talents, but also have perseverance.
The reason why Fan Zhongyan can achieve such great achievements is to use this "forbearance" word to the extreme with his life.
After Fan Zhongyan became an official, he had been dormant and trained in the local area for more than ten years.
It was not until he was 40 years old that he entered the capital as an official on the recommendation of Yan Shu.
Fan Zhong was full of joy and thought that he finally had the opportunity to show his ambitions, but he did not expect that this entry into Beijing would be the beginning of the turmoil in the second half of his life.
In less than a decade, he was demoted three times in succession.
In 1029, Fan Zhongyan, who was still on the rise of his career, offended the Empress Dowager and was banished to Hanoi Province, where the people were not living.
Fan Zhongyan, who first knew that his career was difficult, was also depressed in his heart for a long time.
But no matter how the imperial court cracked down, he would still repeatedly go up and bitterly explain the pros and cons.
And his sincerity also moved Song Renzong.
After the death of the Empress Dowager, Emperor Renzong of Song recalled Fan Zhonghuan to the capital.
Fan Zhongyan, who has experienced this calamity, still has not learned to be cautious in his words and actions.
In 1033, Empress Guo mistakenly injured Emperor Renzong of Song, and Emperor Renzong of Song was furious and intended to depose the empress.
At this time, it was Fan Zhongyan who stood up again and strongly persuaded Song Renzong to think of the country and not to abolish the queen rashly.
As a result, Song Renzong could not listen to his advice and directly demoted him to Muzhou.
This time he was demoted, less than a year after he was recalled to Beijing.
Being belittled so frequently, in other words, it is estimated that they will be tortured to the bone.
But Fan Zhongyan did not. The arduous experience in his early years has long taught him to face the ups and downs of officialdom calmly.
After arriving in Muzhou, Fan Zhongyan did not let himself drown in pain, but devoted himself to the well-being of the people.
Finally, a year later, he returned to the dynasty again for his merits in treating water.
After returning to the dynasty, Fan Zhongyan found that the appointment and dismissal of officials in the entire court were almost completely controlled by Prime Minister Lu Yijian, which caused great obstacles to the selection and employment of talents by the state.
After he saw the drawbacks, he immediately impeached Lü Yijian to Song Renzong.
Unexpectedly, Lu Yijian accused Fan Zhongyan of "overstepping his position and speaking things, recommending friends to the party, and separating the monarchs."
He was again labeled a friend and degraded to Raozhou.
Fan Zhongyan's three ups and downs correspond to a sentence in "Dream of Red Mansions": joy and glory are just right, and hatred is impermanent again.
In the face of the impermanence of fate, Fan Zhongyan did not complain and did not feel sorry for himself, but endured all the oppression with a strong heart.

Fan Zhongyan drowned in "Notes on Yueyang Lou" and used eight words to explain his mentality after being degraded in his later years:
Do not rejoice in things, do not grieve with yourself.
These eight words are the deepest wisdom left to the world by Fan Zhongyan, who has experienced the ups and downs of the sea.
In 1043, Fan Zhongyan, the "Three Dethrons", once again surprised Emperor Renzong of Song because of his outstanding ability to govern the world in the region.
Song Renzong thought about it again and again and decided to use Fan Zhongyan again and let him lead the "Qingli New Policy".
This time, Emperor Renzong of Song directly appointed Fan Zhonghuan as governor of the government, giving him great rights.
As a result, Fan Zhongyan began to carry out drastic reforms, and successively promulgated ten new policies, such as thick peasants and sang, and reduced conscription.
However, these new policy measures, which all aimed at the interests of the DPRK and Chinese officials, were greatly hindered once they were implemented.
Coupled with Song Renzong's indecisiveness, a huge Qingli New Policy ended in failure after only one year and four months.
Fan Zhongyan was also demoted to Deng Zhou again at the age of white hair, and has since withdrawn from the political scene.
Political unhappiness, coupled with being belittled in his later years, this kind of experience that ordinary people can't let go of for decades, but Fan Zhongyan is very open.
He lived in the officialdom for nearly 40 years, and he was repeatedly degraded during his time as an official.
These experiences have long made him look down on all the honors and disgraces, and cultivate a state of mind that is at ease with encounters.
After arriving in Dengzhou, Fan Zhongyan directly took this place as his retirement place.
