The successful launch of the "Tianyue" marks the start of construction of the first 700-meter-class water head pumped storage power station diversion tunnel in central China, which will fill the global gap in the mechanized construction of the full-section mechanized construction of the diversion tunnel of the ultra-high head and ultra-large slope two-stage inclined shaft pumped storage power station.

After 5 years of research, combined with the engineering needs of the construction of inclined wells for water diversion of Pingjiang Pumped Storage Power Station in Hunan Province, the R&D team of "Tianyue" pioneered the proposal of a large-slope composite anti-slip system, and carried out 10 innovative tests such as slag discharge, support, maintenance and material transportation, so that the equipment can efficiently realize the continuous excavation of flat holes and inclined wells, and greatly enhance the applicability of the equipment to complex underground cavern groups.
"We have overcome the problem of large diameter changes of cutterheads and shields, which has allowed us to expand the diameter range of our TBM to 1.5 meters, and for the first time in the world, we have overcome the problem of ultra-small turning radius of 50 meters vertical curve." Shao Qianzhong, an engineer at the TBM Research and Design Institute of Railway Construction Heavy Industries, said.
The excavation of the water diversion system is one of the key nodes of the entire Pingjiang pumped storage power station in Hunan Province. The height difference between the above-mentioned diversion shaft tunnel is 196 meters higher than the 452-meter tallest building in Hunan "IFC". Jiang Mingdong said frankly that if the traditional drilling and blasting construction process is used, it will be difficult to ensure that the power generation can be generated on schedule. The smooth launch of the "Tianyue" will greatly shorten the construction period, reduce the interference of various processes in the construction process, not only greatly improve the efficiency of excavation of the water diversion system, but also ensure the excavation quality and safety factor of the entire water diversion system, which is of great significance to help the Pingjiang pumped storage power station strive for power generation by the end of December 2025.
