During World War II, many countries around the world were shrouded in war, and Timor-Leste also experienced a challenging history in the shadow of this war.

East Timor is a small country in Southeast Asia that has experienced a long history of colonial rule, one of the most notable periods being the Portuguese period, where the East Timorese people experienced the onslaught of foreign cultures and demonstrated their tenacity in their struggle for dignity and freedom.

Portuguese colonists first arrived in East Timor at the beginning of the 16th century, and they were attracted by this beautiful land and rich resources and began to establish a colony here.

The introduction of new varieties of crops, plants and animals by Portuguese colonists, as well as the Christian faith, had a profound impact on East Timorese society, opening up exchanges and collisions between East Timorese and Portuguese culture.

Dutch colonization and British intervention

In the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company began to establish a colony in East Timor, and their interest in the land was mainly focused on its rich spice resources.

The Dutch introduced new crops and also new religious beliefs, and under Dutch colonial rule, East Timor began to undergo cultural and social changes.

Dutch rule was not without conflict, the local people were dissatisfied with foreign rule, they maintained their traditions and culture and did not want to be fully assimilated, and the Dutch colonists faced resistance from the local people while trying to change the local social structure.

Britain and the Netherlands began to compete over the land for control of East Timor, which became a battleground between Britain and the Netherlands.

The people of East Timor have been forced into labour, wealth has been extracted, social order has been upended and the otherwise peaceful island is filled with fear and insecurity.

Under Japanese rule, East Timorese society and culture were also affected, and Japanese forces tried to change people's ideology and spread Japanese culture and values through education and propaganda.

The local people were not assimilated by this domination, and they maintained a deep attachment to their culture and traditions and continued to hold fast to their beliefs.

Despite the exploitation and oppression of Japanese rule, the East Timorese people have never given up their pursuit of freedom, they have launched stubborn resistance and struggle, and made great efforts to defend their dignity and rights.

These guerrillas are fighting hard in the jungle for their country and people, and they face great difficulties and challenges.

Their perseverance and constant search for opportunities to fight the Japanese army became a source of pride for the East Timorese people and a manifestation of their desire for freedom.

The country has emerged from the shadow of war and domination and ushered in a new future, and the people of Timor-Leste, with their tenacity and courage, have laid the foundation for the independence of the country, and Timor-Leste today is striving to build a free, democratic and prosperous country.

Indonesian rule and independence

In the middle of the 20th century, Indonesia became the ruler of East Timor, and Indonesia tried to incorporate East Timor into its territory and implement a policy of integration.

The people of Timor-Leste, unwilling to be overlooked in their unique culture and history, have begun their resistance to foreign domination and have made great efforts to defend their rights and dignity.

Profound changes have taken place in East Timorese society, and the Indonesian Government is trying to impose its culture and values on the East Timorese people.

In the face of Indonesian rule, the East Timorese people began a tenacious struggle to express their dissatisfaction with foreign rule through protests, demonstrations and other forms of resistance.
