The original roster of the team included 14 players, and eventually the Slovenian men's basketball team decided to cut forward Kunk and the big man Jordan Morgan, born in the United States, and finalized the 12-man roster. Morgan's exit means that 2.13m Mike Toby has become the planning player of the Slovenian men's basketball team for the third year in a row. The Red Star Belgrade centre-forward also played with Slovenia at the 2021 Olympics and the 2022 European Championships. He also played briefly for the Charlotte Hornets.

The 2023 Men's Basketball World Cup kicks off on August 25. In this World Cup, Slovenia is drawn in Group F along with Cape Verde, Georgia and Venezuela.

Previously, the Slovenian men's basketball team played six warm-up games with China, Montenegro, Greece (twice), Spain and the United States, beating only China and Montenegro. Nuggets forward Vratko Chanchar tore his cruciate ligament in his second game against Greece, while Doncic did not play against the United States for prevention reasons.
