The new crown strain has appeared! "Sanyang" is coming? Experts respond →

Some speculate that according to the human immunity cycle

The next wave of coronavirus is expected around November

Is this claim credible?

What are the main epidemic strains of the new crown in mainland China at present?

How to protect yourself after autumn?

Let's see what the experts say

Currently circulating strains in mainland China

It is still the XBB series variant

On August 3, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced the national new coronavirus infection epidemic in July, and the number of fever outpatient consultations and the number of severe new crown cases in July showed a fluctuating downward trend. At present, the main circulating strain in China is still the XBB series variant.

Recently, the new coronavirus variant EG.5 is spreading rapidly in the United States and other countries, and the number of infection cases is also on the rise in many parts of the world, and the World Health Organization listed it as a "variant of concern" on August 9.

However, experts and scholars generally believe that EG.5 does not pose a serious threat to public health. Zhao Wei, director of the Biosafety Research Center of the School of Public Health of Southern Medical University, said that overall, the harm caused by the variant EG.5 is within a controllable range, and the mainland does not need to worry about the new round of epidemic impact that EG.5 may bring.

What is EG.5?

Where does it spread?

EG.5, the "descendant" of the new coronavirus Omicron subvariant XBB.1.9.2, was first detected on February 17 this year.

The way the virus enters cells and tissues in the human body is also similar to XBB.1.5 and other Omicron variants. On social media, netizens have named the variant "Eris" according to the Greek alphabet, but this has not been officially recognized by the WHO.

Since the beginning of July, the number of cases of new coronavirus infection caused by EG.5 has increased, and WHO listed it as a variant "in need of surveillance" on 19 July.

As of 7 August, 7,354 EG.5 gene sequences from 51 countries had been uploaded to the Global Initiative to Share All Influenza Data (GISAIDs), including the United States, South Korea, Japan, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, France, Portugal and Spain.

In its latest assessment, WHO refers to EG.5 and its closely related subvariants, including EG.5.1. According to the UK Health Security Agency, EG.5.1 currently accounts for about one-seventh of COVID cases detected in hospitals. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that EG.5 has been circulating in the U.S. since April and is now responsible for about 17% of new infections, surpassing other Omicron subvariants as the most common variant. According to the U.S. federal health agency, the number of hospitalizations due to the new crown is increasing across the United States, with hospitalizations increasing by 12.5% in the latest week to 9,056.

The vaccine still protects against EG.5 infection

EG.5.1 has two important additional mutations that XBB.1.9.2 does not have, F456L and Q52H, while EG.5 only has the F456L mutation. An additional small change in EG.5.1, the Q52H mutation in the spike protein, gives it an advantage over EG.5 in terms of transmission.

The good news is that a CDC spokesperson said currently available treatments and vaccines are expected to remain effective against the variant.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Mandy Cohen said the vaccine updated in September would provide protection against EG.5 and that the new variant did not represent a major shift, Reuters reported.

The UK Health Security Agency says vaccination remains the best defence against future coronavirus pandemics, so it's still important that people get all eligible vaccines as soon as possible.

The next wave of coronavirus

Probably around November?

Peng Jie, director of the Difficult Infection Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Southern Medical University Nanfang Hospital, said that the statement that "the next wave of new crown epidemic may appear around November this autumn" is only speculation, and there is not much scientific evidence to verify, so there is no need to panic.

Peng Jie said that since the peak of the new crown "two yang" in May, there have been patients with fever in the outpatient clinic, and it was found that they were infected with the new crown virus after passing nucleic acid testing. Among these patients, there are "Shouyang", "Eryang" and "Sanyang" people, among them, the number of "Sanyang" patients is very small and the symptoms are mild. On the whole, the current epidemic situation is still in a relatively stable and low-level stage of development.

Wang Xinyu, deputy director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, said: "It is now in a relatively stable, or trough, stage. It is true that we have encountered cases where we may be infected again after three months in the short term, but most of these patients have mild symptoms. ”
