"Dracaena", a fascinating species

author:Cold Mountain Residence

"Dracaena" has umbrella-like branches and red resin resembling dragon's blood grows on the trunk, making it a fascinating species

"Dracaena", scientifically known as cinnabar dracaena, is native to the Socotra Islands off the coast of Yemen. The trees get their name from their unique appearance, with umbrella-shaped branches extending outward and upward from the trunk, giving them a unique and striking silhouette.

What makes these trees truly fascinating, however, is their ability to produce a deep red resin from the trunk that has historically been used for various purposes, such as dyeing fabrics and as a medicinal ingredient. This resin is said to resemble dragon's blood, hence the tree's name.

Despite its attractive appearance and unique characteristics, the tree is on the verge of extinction due to habitat loss and overfishing of resin. Efforts are under way to protect and conserve these trees, which remain symbols of the incredible biodiversity of our planet.
