Lothar Herbert Mateus ( born March 21 , 1961 ) is a Bavarian former German footballer who captained the German national team to win the World Cup in 1990 , and was named the World Cup Silver Ball of the Year , European Footballer of the Year and German Footballer of the Year. A year later, he was named the first World Footballer of the Year (and the only German winner of the award to date). One of the best German superstars in the history of world football. In 2004, he was named one of the 125 best living stars (FIFA 100) by Pele Player.

Mateus made his name very early with the German national team, having played with the German national team in 1980, winning the 1980 European Championship. He also played in Euro '84 and '88. He also played in five World Cups between 1982-98 and held the record for the most appearances in a World Cup final (25). He won the 1990 World Cup.

Although Mateus is not flashy in his footwork, he has strong ball control, simple and efficient, strong sense of assist and defense, a large range of motion, is completely a highly mobile all-round midfielder, and has a strong fighting spirit and long-range shooting skills. Mateus is well-rounded, his explosive ability in interception and tackle-making is excellent, and he runs aggressively on the field, shooting hard and accurately. However, because of his short temper and frequent quarrels with referees, he has the title of "Little Bully" in the football world.
At the 2000 UEFA European Championship at the age of 39, Mateus played 150 games for the German national team until his retirement, scoring 23 goals.
In June 2014, Mateus received a Guinness World Record certificate for 25 World Cup matches in Berlin, Germany.

Mateus began his club career with FC Herzogenaurach in the small town of Herzogen on the outskirts of Erlangen, before moving to Singerladbach in 1979–84. The peak of Mateus's career was from 1984-2000, during which time he played for Bayern Munich in 1984-88 and 1992-2000, and Inter Milan from 1988-92.

Mateus moved to Serie A club Inter Milan in 1988, winning the Serie A title in 1989. Early in his playing career , Mateus played primarily as a midfielder. He returned to Bayern Munich in 1992 and won several Bundesliga titles. He won almost every major award of his career, with the only regret being the loss of the Champions League, where he reached the final for Bayern in 1987 and 1999, but both games were 1-0 up for most of the game, and after scoring two goals at the end of the match, he lost 2-1 to the Champions League trophy to Porto and Manchester United.

Mateus's first team was Austria's Wien Swift with mediocre results. In December 2002, he took over from Partizan Belgrade and successfully led the team to promotion to the Europa League. In December 2003 he announced his resignation and the next day signed as head coach of the Hungarian national team.
On 11 January 2006 , Mateus signed a one-year contract with Atlético Paranaen in Brazil , but only managed seven games ( 5 wins and 2 draws ) , telling the team in March that he urgently needed to return to Europe to attend to personal matters , but never returned , and faxed his resignation two weeks later.
In May 2006, Mateus accepted an offer from Red Bull Salzburg in Austria to become its manager for the 2006–07 season.

In April 2008, Mateus was appointed head coach for the 2008–09 season by Israeli club Nitanje Maccabi. After a year, the club's top brass announced that due to financial reasons, it would not renew Mateus' contract at the end of the season.
On 21 September 2010, Mateus coached the Bulgarian national team. However, due to poor qualifier results, on September 19, 2011, the Bulgarian Football Association announced the termination of his contract with Mateus, who remained in office for only one year.

In 2003, Mateus began his third marriage to a Serbian model named Mariana Kstić. In 2007, Mateus divorced Mariana Kstić.
In January 2009, Mateus married Liliana, who was 21 years younger than him, in Las Vegas, USA, but after marriage, Liliana often had affair with other men. In January 2010, Mateus divorced Liliana.
