Lothar Herbert Mateus ( born March 21 , 1961 ) is a Bavarian former German footballer who captained the German national team to win the World Cup in 1990 , and was named the World Cup Silver Ball of the Year , European Footballer of the Year and German Footballer of the Year. A year later, he was named the first World Footballer of the Year (and the only German winner of the award to date). One of the best German superstars in the history of world football. In 2004, he was named one of the 125 best living stars (FIFA 100) by Pele Player.

Mateus made his name very early with the German national team, having played with the German national team in 1980, winning the 1980 European Championship. He also played in Euro '84 and '88. Mateus began his club career with FC Herzogenaurach in the small town of Herzogen on the outskirts of Erlangen, before moving to Singerladbach in 1979–84. The peak of Mateus's career was from 1984-2000, during which time he played for Bayern Munich in 1984-88 and 1992-2000, and Inter Milan from 1988-92.

Mateus moved to Serie A club Inter Milan in 1988, winning the Serie A title in 1989. Early in his playing career , Mateus played primarily as a midfielder. He returned to Bayern Munich in 1992 and won several Bundesliga titles. Mateus's first team was Austria's Wien Swift with mediocre results. In December 2002, he took over from Partizan Belgrade and successfully led the team to promotion to the Europa League. In April 2008, Mateus was appointed head coach for the 2008–09 season by Israeli club Nitanje Maccabi. After a year, the club's top brass announced that due to financial reasons, it would not renew Mateus' contract at the end of the season.

On 21 September 2010, Mateus coached the Bulgarian national team. However, due to poor qualifier results, on September 19, 2011, the Bulgarian Football Association announced the termination of his contract with Mateus, who remained in office for only one year.
