Let the FSR 2.0 invasion begin!

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 supports 16 games

AMD released a new blog post earlier this morning sharing more details about video games and game developers adopting FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0). According to AMD, 16 new games will soon receive FSR 2.0 support, including popular games such as Hitman 3 and Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The adoption of FSR 2.0 by game development studios also looks good, with 19 game studios supporting AMD's upgrade technology. These companies include ACME Game Studio, Arkane Lyon, Asobo Studio, CCP Games, GIANTS Software, IO Interactive, Luminous Productions, Losigo Network, Obsidian Entertainment, Perfect World Games (developer of Perfect World and Swordsman), Reflection/Bandai Namco, and Respawn Entertainment, rct.ai, Santa Monica Studio, Souleve/Netmarble F&C, Striking Distance Studios, Tag Studio, Thunder Fire, and Wonder People.

As a result, over time, we should see more new and current games with AMD's new upgrade technology. Therefore, the future of the FSR is bright.

With the addition of 16 new games supported by FSR 2.0, the number of video games with version 2.0 has increased to 19 so far. Upcoming games include Abyssal World, Asterigos, Delysium, Star Wars Eve: Dawn, Cursed Lands, Surviving in Confinement, Hitman 3, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Against the Water, Overprime, Perfect World Remastered, and Live! Operation Rescue, Superhuman, Swordsman Remake, Callisto Protocol, and Unknown 9: Awakening. This is on top of three games that already support FSR 2.0, including God of War, Death Loop, and Farm Sim 22.

Surprisingly, AMD also announced the simultaneous addition of support for FSR 1.0. There are now seven more games that support version 1.0, including Armed Raid Reforger, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Dumont Dolmen, Hitman 3, Raji: Ancient Saga, Sniper Elite 5, The Elder Scrolls OL, and V Rising.

This may seem strange considering that FSR 2.0 is already widely used. However, the more basic upgrade techniques of FSR 1.0 require much less GPU hardware. In addition, the 1.0 version of the game implementation requirements are also less demanding for game developers. These two facts can make FSR 1.0 more attractive than FSR 2.0. However, there is nothing stopping developers from adding 1.0 and 2.0 to a single game.

Official AMD FSR 2.0 Benchmarks - God of War and Farm Simulator 22

In the blog post, AMD also shared new benchmarks for FSR 2.0 running on God of War and Farm Simulator 22. For testing, AMD used two new "6x50 XT" series GPUs, including the Radeon RX 6950 XT and RX 6750 XT paired with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU and 3600MHz DDR4 memory.

Technically, the 6650 XT is listed in the test suite; However, AMD accidentally duplicated the slides of the 6750 XT twice in Farm Simulator 22, so we don't know how well the 6650 XT will perform until AMD fixes the editing error.

In God of War in the 4K Ultra setup, the RX 6950 XT shows up to 45% gain at various FSR 2.0 presets. At native resolution, the average frame rate was in the mid-60s. When using FSR 2.0 quality, the average frame rate increases the most to 83 FPS. However, in Balanced and Performance mode, performance starts to degrade, with Balance reaching 90 FPS and Balancing reaching 96 FPS respectively.

With the RX 6750 XT, we can see the same behavior in God of War at the same settings, but with a significant reduction in frame rate, which is expected. The frame rate at native resolution is not very good, with an average FPS of 40 seconds. But the quality mode mainly fixes the average jump to 54 FPS frame rate. Balanced mode is only slightly better at 58 FPS. Performance mode is the only FSR option that allows the 6750 XT to exceed 60 FPS with an average of 63 FPS.

Farm Simulator saw more linear results in FSR 2.0, with FPS increasing evenly across all three quality presets. With the RX 6750 XT, the frame rate at native resolution is already pretty good, averaging 107 FPS. However, they do get better when FSR 2.0 is enabled. In quality mode, the frame rate increases to an average of 124 FPS, in balanced it rises to 135 FPS, and in performance mode, the average frame rate rises to a maximum of 146.

Likewise, unfortunately, AMD made an editing error in its post and copied the slides of the RX 6750 XT, so we currently do not have the results of the RX 6650 XT in Farm Simulator 22. However, AMD does say that FSR 2.0 improves performance by a factor of 1.4 in 4K resolution in Farm Simulator 22 with the 6650 XT. Therefore, AMD's low-end RDNA2 GPUs are expected to increase similar frame rates, just like the RX 6750 XT results.
