UCAS has updated its data report for the 2023 application season to take a look at the 2023 undergraduate application situation in the UK on the occasion of the 2024 application.
The number of applicants for the 2023Cycle has decreased
The total number of applicants in 2023cycle is as high as 596,590, a decrease of 14,140 compared with last year (610,730)!
The UK mainland will continue to be the main force of British applications in 2023, with a total of 481,670 applicants, accounting for 80.7%. But the total number of applicants was also down by 17,650 compared to the same period last year.
In addition to international applicants from the UK and the EU, there were 94,410 applicants in 2023, accounting for 15.8% of the total number of applicants. Compared with last year, it increased by nearly 4,000 people.
Of these Chinese mainland there were 27,710 applicants, accounting for 4.6% of the total number of applicants and 29.3% of the total number of applications for international students (Not-EU). Compared with last year, the total number of applicants from Chinese mainland also decreased, down by 1,220.
Application status of popular majors
Overall applications have fallen, so overall applications for all majors have decreased, but there are also some subjects that have "soared" and increased from last year, such as computer, physics, engineering and technology, sociology and geography, earth and environmental studies. Most of these subjects are also part of the subjects that Chinese students often choose.
Medical-related: The number of applicants decreased by 30,000+
The most popular direction in the 22-23 application season is still medicine, with a total of 360,980 people applying for this direction, down 34,000+ from last year, and the number of applicants last year was 360,980, and the number of people can still rank first.
Business management: the direction that will make the most money
The second is the "most profitable" business management direction, a total of 333330 people, slightly lower than last year 3130 people, comprehensive data in the past five years, the data of the business management direction is not fluctuating much, relatively stable. It seems that "Qiantu" has an unshakable position in the hearts of applicants, of course, this is also inseparable from the high salary and good employment of business.
Social Sciences: The number of applicants continues to decline
The third most popular major is the social sciences, including sociology, anthropology and other sub-majors. A total of 299,910 people applied for social sciences in the 22/23 cycle, showing a continuous downward trend compared with the previous two years.
Other popular majors to apply
Engineering and technology, computer science and biology, which are more popular in our cognition, are also more popular, and the number of applicants exceeds 100,000+. However, the number of applicants for the mathematical sciences direction was only 57,000, and the physical sciences direction was only 75,000 applications, which is somewhat unexpected.
The least number of applicants was in the [Joint and General Studies] track, with only 11,160 applicants, and the number of applications for niche majors such as veterinary medicine, agriculture and food-related was also relatively small. It seems that the choice of niche majors still needs the blessing of love, and the choice needs to be more cautious.
Top 10 undergraduate enrollment data of UK universities
Looking at the complete data, let's take a look at the admission situation of the top 10 institutions in the UK that everyone is more concerned about, because UCAS has not yet released the latest data of institutions, let's take the 2022 application cycle as an example.
Cambridge University/Acceptance Rate: 15.5%
The 2024 QS ranking was released, and the University of Cambridge once again secured the second place in the world, while also beating Oxford to become the number one university in the UK.
According to UCAS data, a total of 22,995 students submitted applications to Cambridge last year (a student can only apply for one Cambridge major, so it is the number), and Cambridge University admitted 3,555 applicants, with an overall acceptance rate of 15.5%.
University of Oxford / Acceptance rate: 13.7%
In the 2024 QS ranking, Oxford University surpassed Harvard, Stanford and other strong universities to successfully rank third in the world and second in the UK.
According to UCAS, a total of 24,080 students applied to Oxford last year (a student can only apply for one Oxford major, so that's the number), and Oxford accepted 3,300 applicants, with an overall acceptance rate of 13.7%.
Imperial College / Acceptance rate: 10.8%
Imperial College London reached a new high in the 2024 QS rankings, ranking sixth in the world, which once again proves the strength and reputation of the school.
Imperial College London performs very well in many indicators such as academic reputation and employer reputation, and this rise in the ranking has also made many graduates feel honored.
According to UCAS data, Imperial received 28,620 applications last year (IC accepts applicants to apply for multiple majors at the same time, so it is the number of copies), and 3,090 people were finally accepted, with an overall acceptance rate of 10.8%.
University College London / Acceptance Rate: 10.1%
In the latest 2024QS ranking, UCL dropped one place in the global ranking, falling to 9th, but still firmly in the world's top ten throne ~ Don't panic! It's still UK NO.4!
According to UCAS data, UCL received 74,775 applications in 22 years (UCL accepts applicants to apply for multiple majors at the same time, so it is the number of copies), and eventually 7,530 people were admitted, with an overall acceptance rate of 10.1%.
London School of Economics and Political Science / Acceptance rate: 8.1%
According to the latest 2024QS ranking, "Goddess" LSE has improved significantly this time! Successfully entered the world's TOP50~
LSE has been questioned a lot before because it is the only G5 school that "can't enter the top 50" (of course, this school is the top in strength, and the admission requirements are not inferior to Oxbridge!). I wonder if this progress makes its difficult admission more "confident"?
According to UCAS data, LSE received 26,625 applications in 22 years (LSE accepts applicants to apply for multiple majors at the same time, so it is the number of copies), and eventually 2150 people were admitted, with an overall acceptance rate of 8.1%.
University of Edinburgh / Acceptance rate: 8.6%
The 2024 QS ranking was announced, and the students of Ai University must belong to the group that is not very happy... The school plummeted to 22 from 15 last year.
The academic strength of the University of Edinburgh is undoubted, but this time it is slightly inferior in terms of faculty and internationalization, which must be a new direction for the school.
According to UCAS data, the University of Edinburgh received 77,730 applications in 22 years (Edinburgh accepts applicants to apply for multiple majors at the same time, so it is the number of copies), and finally 6680 people were accepted, with an overall acceptance rate of 8.6%.
University of Manchester / Acceptance rate: 10.4%
In the 2024 QS rankings, the University of Manchester has not fallen much in the world rankings: from 28 to 32, students have said: Manchester University, you have to stand up!
According to UCAS data, the University of Manchester received 92,310 applications in 22 years (the University accepts applicants to apply for multiple majors at the same time, so it is the number of copies), and 9,600 people were finally accepted, with an overall acceptance rate of 10.4%.
King's University London / Acceptance rate: 10.4%
KCL's world ranking in the 2024QS Rankings dropped from 37 to 40 in the UK University Rankings, with KCL remaining 6th in the UK.
However, as the world ranking falls, the school will also make more efforts to improve its international competitiveness.
According to UCAS data, KCL received 70,090 applications in 22 years (KCL accepts applicants to apply for multiple majors at the same time, so it is the number of copies), and finally 7,320 people were admitted, with an overall acceptance rate of 10.4%.
University of Bristol / Acceptance rate: 10.2%
The University of Bristol rose in the 2024QS rankings, rising from 61 last year to 55 this year.
It is definitely a very good result, and it also proves the school's educational quality and scientific research strength, which is definitely not the so-called pheasant university.
According to UCAS data, the University of Bristol received 60,075 applications in 22 years (the University accepts applicants to apply for multiple majors at the same time, so it is the number of copies), and finally 6145 people were accepted, with an overall acceptance rate of 10.2%.
University of Warwick / Acceptance rate: 13.1%
According to the latest 2024 QS rankings, the University of Warwick dropped from 64 to 67. Danger to keep the top 10 seats in the UK, and the University of Leeds, which is the eleventh place in the UK, is not very different, I don't know if it will be overtaken next year?
According to UCAS data, the University of Warwick received 43,735 applications in 22 years (Warwick accepts applicants to apply for multiple majors at the same time, so it is the number of copies), and eventually 5,735 people were accepted, with an overall acceptance rate of 13.1%.
