According to reports, the accident occurred at about 10 a.m. local time on the 6th at a private girls' primary school in Wimbledon. Reuters quoted local media as saying that at that time, the students were holding a final celebration party with parents and teachers in the school's garden.

Emergency services said a total of 16 people were treated at the scene, including multiple children, and 10 were taken to hospital. The latest police information said that an 8-year-old girl died tragically.

Police also said in a statement that a female driver, in her 40s, was arrested on charges of "allegedly dangerous driving causing the death of another person." The case is under investigation. Asked how the car involved crashed into the school, senior police officer Claire Kaylan responded that she would not speculate for the time being.

AFP reported that witnesses and journalists revealed that the road outside the school was narrow and it was often difficult to speed up.

Wimbledon MP Hammond told the BBC that the school campus mainly admits students aged 4 to 11. Hammond also said the scale of the emergency response showed the seriousness of the incident, with multiple injured people "in critical condition" and "very distressing and worrying".

The BBC said local police had declared it a "major incident" but that the incident was not considered terrorism-related.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Sunak said the prime minister thanked the emergency services for their response and expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. "It will be a terrible experience for all the kids, staff and parents."
