Chenhai Highway
Starting from Chenjia Town in the east and Xinhai Town in the west to the north along the highway, the Chenhai Highway is one of the "four horizontal and seven vertical" of the island's trunk road network, which is a traffic "artery" in Chongming and the only municipal first-class highway in Chongming.
This highway is of great significance to Chongming people, and it is also of great significance to improve the transportation system of the mainland coastal passage.
Do you know? After the reform and opening up, with the rapid development of Chongming industry and agriculture, the Chenhai Highway has undergone several major renovations and expansions before the current route and road appearance have been formed.
In the middle and late eighties of last century, the problems of (former) Chen Hai Highway such as sharp bends, narrow roads, thin road structure, and low load level of bridges gradually became prominent, and they no longer met the needs of Chongming's economic and social development, especially the traffic running through major market towns such as Chengqiao Town, Xinhe Town, Zhixin Town, and Bao Town was more congested. In May 1987, the Shanghai Municipal Administration approved the renovation and widening project of the castle section of the (former) Chenhai Highway. From 1989 to 1991, the widening project from the south gate of the (former) Chen Hai Highway to Bao Town was fully constructed, with a total length of 29.48 kilometers, which was completed in November 1991 and opened to traffic on December 5.

With the accelerated development of Chongming's ecological construction and the continuous extension of external transportation, since 1996, the Chenhai Highway has been reconstructed successively into the western, eastern and central sections, with a total length of about 67 kilometers, forming a new Chenhai Highway.
Since 1996, the western section of Chenhai Highway (from the Zhongshuanggang Bridge of Sanshuang Highway to the west to the north along the road section of Xinhai Farm) has been reconstructed, with a total length of 24 kilometers, and was completed and opened to traffic in 2000.
Since 2000, the eastern section of Chenhai Highway (Beichen Highway to the North Section of Baozhen) has been reconstructed, with a total length of 17.4 kilometers, and was completed and opened to traffic in 2003.
From 2003 to 2005, the middle section of Chenhai Highway (Hong Kong Highway to Sanshuang Highway) was reconstructed, with a total length of 25.9 kilometers, and was completed and opened to traffic in early 2005.
After 10 years and several rounds of large-scale reconstruction and expansion projects, the Xinchenhai Highway has been completed in sections, which has greatly improved the traffic capacity of Chongming Island in the east-west direction and facilitated the travel of citizens.
During the reconstruction of the Xinchenhai Highway, a total of 57 bridges were reconstructed or built along the route, of which 21 were reconstructed and 36 were newly built. In particular, the length of the middle section of the reconstructed Chenhai Highway is shortened by 5 kilometers compared with the original route.
On December 28, 2006, the Chongming Highway Department submitted a request to the county construction management committee to change the name of the former middle section of Chenhai Highway to "Tuancheng Highway". On January 1, 2007, the Shanghai Municipal Highway Administration signed a transfer agreement with the Chongming County Construction Management Committee to transfer the middle section of the former Chenhai Highway to Chongming County for management. Since then, the (former) Chenhai Highway has been renamed as Honghai Highway, Chen Biao Highway and Tuancheng Highway in three sections, which together with the new Chenhai Highway carry the land transportation on the island and facilitate the daily travel of the people.
With the steady progress of the construction of a world-class ecological island, the extensive road network runs through Chongming, and the development of transportation on the island continues to usher in new opportunities and new atmosphere, in recent years, the Chenhai Highway has also undergone several rounds of new repairs, further forming a convenient, efficient, intelligent and green ecological highway.
Since April 2017, the "white to black" overhaul project of the Sanshuang Highway to the west bridge of Miaogang Bridge in the western section of Chenhai Highway has been launched. Since the opening of this section of road at the end of 1999, the concrete pavement has suffered different degrees of damage, which has affected the smoothness of the road surface and the safety and comfort of driving. The overhaul was carried out in two phases, with resonant crushing of the original cement concrete pavement, asphalt surface layering, and maintenance of the bridge deck and ancillary facilities; Transformed the original bus station into a harbor-style parking station; The sink and the ultra-high drainage inlet of the central divider belt have been adjusted accordingly according to the design level; In addition, flip side flat stones, curb stones, water barrier side stones, locally raised anti-collision guardrails, add machine non-separating buffer belts, restore greening, and restore markings. After the overhaul was completed in the second half of 2019, the driving comfort of this section of the road has been greatly improved.

As a supporting project of the 10th China Flower Expo in 2021, since December 2019, in order to improve the backbone road network system in Chongming Island and improve the road traffic capacity of Chenhai Highway, the section from the port along the road to the North Chen Highway in the eastern section of the Chen Hai Highway has been widened and reconstructed. This renovation not only expanded the original four-lane two-way lane to six-lane two-way lane, but also expanded the original 2.5-meter slow passage on both sides to 3.5 meters, and also rebuilt the green belt in the center of the road. In this expansion project, 9 pedestrian bridges were also built to reduce the intersection, and 9 kinds of flowers were selected for 9 kinds of flowers, including plum blossoms, peonies, lotuses, moon seasons, narcissus, camellias, osmanthus flowers, orchids and azaleas, highlighting the traditional Chinese flower culture, which is both practical and beautiful, and creates a sense of atmosphere of "blooming flowers in the 10th China Flower Expo".

In recent years, in terms of transportation on the island, new reconstruction and expansion projects of key roads such as Chongming Avenue, North Highway and Construction Highway, and the first and second phases of the Landscape Road around the island have been put into operation, improving Chongming's "four horizontal and seven vertical" regional road network; The external transportation network is also constantly being built, the rail transit Chongming line is advancing in an orderly manner, and the construction of the Shanghai-Yurong high-speed railway is in full swing, injecting new impetus into the exchanges and communication between Chongming and Shanghai and cities in the Yangtze River Delta.
