The Los Angeles Lakers selected Jalen Hood-Schifino from Indiana University's dual-energy guard with the 17th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Given the already large proportion of guards on the Lakers' roster, some were surprised that the Lakers drafted a guard. Although both Austin Reeves and DeAngelo Russell are free agents, there are reports that the Lakers share a common interest in retaining both as well as Dennis Schroder.
Restricted free agent
It remains to be seen how the free agent market will perform in the coming days, but according to league sources, the Lakers' two primary targets in the 2023 NBA Draft are Hood Schifino and another guard, Kobe Bryant, who was selected with the 15th pick. The Lakers value the two guards so much because they see them as potential replacements for Reeves if the offer prevents them from bringing back restricted free agents.
With Reeves becoming a restricted free agent for the first time, the 25-year-old won't be short of suitors after his breakthrough in the regular season and playoffs in 2022-23. During the Lakers' Western Conference Finals, Reeves averaged 16.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 44.3 percent from three-point range and 89.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Enter the free market
With the start of the free agent market, Reeves has reportedly attracted interest from rebuilding teams like the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs.
Since the Lakers only signed Reeves to a two-year contract before his rookie season, they only have his early bird rights, not full bird rights. That being the case, the Lakers can only offer Reeves up to $51 million in free agent for four years. Still, Reeves is a restricted free agent, meaning the Lakers have the ability to match any offer he signs with another team.
"Arenas" clause
Reeves fell into a strange loophole in the league's collective bargaining agreement, known as the "Arenas" clause. The salary that other teams can offer in the first two years of Reeves' new contract is limited, although they can provide him with a top salary in the third and fourth years, which will amount to about four years and $98 million, better known as a poison pill contract.
CBA nature
While Reeves has made it clear that he wants to stay with the Lakers, he is also open to making as much money as possible in free agency, given that his first two seasons earned the lowest in the league.
To do this, Reeves needs to get an offer from the Rockets, Spurs, or other teams with salary space. If he does get a top salary offer, then the Lakers will need to decide whether they want to match it, which can get tricky given how much other free agents they need to pay and the nature of the new CBA. For these reasons, the Lakers selected a guard with the 17th pick and may have picked a potential replacement for Reeves in Hood Schifino.

The nature of the CBA is a collective bargaining agreement designed to ensure fair cooperation between players and the league and to provide a framework from which both parties can benefit.
