Vanoy, a credit commissioner on Chicago's South Side, was struggling to earn a bachelor's degree when they first met, according to The Washington Post at the time. After a 1985 Bulls game, the couple were introduced to each other at a Bennegan restaurant in Chicago.

When Vanoy and Jordan married in Little Whitechapel in Las Vegas in November 1989, they already had parents of their son, Jeffrey Jordan, who had been born the year before. At first, Jordan didn't believe Jeffrey was his son.

In 1990, Michael and Juanita welcomed their second son, Marcus, while their daughter Jasmine was born in 1992. Both of their sons went to play basketball, but didn't pursue NBA recognition like their father.

Vanoy originally filed for divorce papers in 2002, citing irreconcilable disagreements, according to People. The couple tried to reconcile, and a month later she withdrew her divorce application.
