The most common traffic accident we encounter in daily driving is rear-end collisions, especially rear-end accidents that occur on highways, because of the fast speed, so the injuries to the occupants of the vehicle are particularly serious, but there are few crash tests for high-speed serial rear-end collisions in the world.
As a responsible car company, Dongfeng Citroen dared to be the first in the world this time, took the initiative to cooperate with the China Automotive Research Institute Automotive Safety Technology Center, and took the Versailles C5 X 2023 model as the experimental object, and conducted the first high-speed serial rear-end collision active and passive safety joint test in China, simulating real road traffic emergencies and bringing a "hardcore" safety strength test to the real safety performance of the vehicle!
The first real simulation test in China
The test uses three Versailles C5 X 2023 models as test models, which realistically reproduces the most common highway serial rear-end collision accidents, in which the No. 1 vehicle simulates the rear-end vehicle, stationary at the predetermined impact position while the engine is running.
Car No. 2 accelerates to a speed of 60km/h on the simulated experimental road, and remains until the tail of chasing Car No. 1; Car No. 3 also accelerates to 60km/h while maintaining a safe distance, and follows behind Car No. 2, and after the collision accident of Car 1 and Car 2, see whether the AEB system of Car No. 3 is working normally, correctly identify the vehicle in front, and automatically take corresponding braking measures to prevent Car No. 3 from chasing and colliding with Car 1 and 2 in front again.
It should be noted that this is the first time in China to carry out such a simulation experiment of real high-speed road conditions rear-end collision accident, and China Automotive Research Institute Automotive Safety Technology Center, as the most authoritative and professional automobile quality assessment institution in China, designed the entire test environment and result standards, providing complete and professional technical support for this experiment. Although the test is only a few tens of seconds, the entire evaluation standard has 5 major sections and 12 inspection items, which is not only the active and passive multi-dimensional safety test verification of the Versailles C5 X 2023 model, but also lays the foundation and standard for more similar practical scenario tests in the future.
In terms of authoritative certification, CAIC and Dongfeng Citroen invited a number of industry experts and scholars, as well as CCTV, major media, and car owners to form an on-site observation group to experience the whole process of testing firsthand, which shows our confidence in the performance of our products in active and passive safety.
On the day of the test, there were still many uncertainties on site. First of all, the impact speed of the crash test is 20% higher than the national standard (from 50km/h to 60km/h of the national standard), in addition, the national standard of rear collision is 1100kg, while the total mass of the Versailles C5 X 2023 model is 1750kg, which is 59% higher than the national standard. In the case of increased speed and weight, the total energy of this collision experiment has increased by 129% compared with the national standard, which is equivalent to more than 1 times the difficulty, and you can imagine how difficult it is to get good results.
In addition, weather reasons also affected the test. May 6 was the beginning of summer, and the test site experienced a long period of rain the day before the test, and the test day was also overcast, and part of the test road was still wet, which would have a certain impact on the vehicle's emergency braking. For example, after the rear-end collision of cars 1 and 2, the slippery road will make the collision degree more serious, and the 1 and 2 vehicles may deviate from the straight line after rear-ending, and the vehicle shape after the impact is unpredictable, so the AEB system vehicle recognition and braking reaction time of the No. 3 car puts forward higher requirements, any situation may cause misjudgment or action delay of the AEB system, resulting in the formation of a 3-car chase collision situation.
How much Versailles is the Versailles C5 X 2023?
Because there are too many factors affecting the test, until a few hours before the test, the team of CARI is still carrying out various pre-test inspections, testing the working conditions of the car, various sensors and the setting of the dummy in the car.
In the test, the Versailles C5 X 2023 No. 2 car chased the parking space of No. 1 car according to the predetermined route, and the impact position was on the left side of the rear of No. 1 car and the right side of the front of No. 2 car, and the two cars also had a certain degree of displacement along the right front after the rear-end collision. The No. 3 car, which remained closely following on the predetermined line, quickly recognized the front car after the impact and actively braked, allowing the No. 3 car to quickly stop, perfectly avoiding the serial accident of chasing No. 2 car again.
After the No. 2 car rear-end collision, the front anti-collision beam and energy-absorbing box also absorb the energy of the impact well, and the right fenders have collapse and deformation, but the right side A-pillar of the vehicle, and even the front windshield are kept intact, the co-driver's door can be opened, and the front airbags are working normally to ensure the safety of personnel.
All the measurement points in the upper and lower parts of the passenger compartment meet the standards, the A pillar and B pillar are complete, the passenger compartment is not deformed, and the door glass is not significantly broken; The cockpit is structurally intact, with intact hinges and doors that open normally. After opening the door, all the airbags are deployed, which plays a positive and effective protection, while the seat does not fail, the seat slide does not displace significantly, and the damage value of the dummy in the cockpit is 96.5%, which is better than the requirement of 95% of the E-NCAP performance limit, ensuring the safety of the driver and passengers to the greatest extent. During the collision, the No. 2 vehicle has obvious braking operation, which reduces the risk of secondary collision, and the dummy can be removed normally after the collision, providing more possibilities for rescue after the accident.
The AEB function of car No. 3 intervenes in time, the emergency braking effect is good, and the brake stops in time at a distance of 0.44 meters from the accident point, which perfectly avoids serial collisions.
As the first batch of models participating in this test, the final Versailles C5 X 2023 won the "3A" evaluation with excellent results in 5 major sections of vehicle structure, restraint system, fuel system integrity, post-accident rescue, and active safety, and passed all 12 verifications, respectively, simulating high-speed serial rear-end collision scenarios (60km/h) passenger car rear collision fuel system safety grade A; Simulate high-speed serial rear-end collision scene (60km/h) passenger car frontal collision occupant protection class A; Simulate high-speed serial rear-end collision scene (60km/h) AEB performance Class A, the strength proves that "global quality" is ahead of the industry standard.
One crash test, multi-dimensional safety verification
High-speed rear-end collisions, steering collisions, and hitting objects such as stationary vehicles, buildings or trees on curves or narrow lanes are all traffic accidents that are high in life. The test simulated the high-speed rear-end collision of three Versailles C5 X 2023 models in real scenarios, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the passive safety of the front and rear collisions and the active safety performance of AEB automatic emergency braking, so that the global quality and "self-cultivation" of the Versailles C5 X 2023 models were once again truly displayed in front of people's eyes.
As the flagship model of Dongfeng Citroen's "Made in Chengdu and Global Sales", the Versailles C5 X 2023 is designed in accordance with the high safety standards of different road driving conditions and environments around the world, and the utilization rate of high-strength steel in the whole body is as high as 80%, which not only ensures the strength of the body structure during the collision, but also applies high-strength steel in the front, side, rear, roof and bottom parts of the vehicle, ensuring driving safety in multiple directions.
In addition, thanks to the use of double-sided ultra-thick galvanized steel sheets with leading proportion and thickness by domestic vehicle enterprises, as well as the high-strength anti-collision design of six-horizontal and six-vertical baseplates, the "steel and iron bone" of the Versailles C5 X 2023 model has been built, which can effectively disperse the impact energy during the collision and ensure the safety of the occupants. This is also the reason why the A-pillar and B-pillar in the passenger compartment structure of the first two Versailles C5 X 2023 models were not deformed, creating a premise for the restraint system such as airbags and seat belts, minimizing the impact on the body parts such as the head, chest and pelvis of the occupants, so that the test dummy in different positions in the car was perfectly protected.
In urban commuting, common collision events also include an emergency stop of the car in front, or an accident caused by a collision with a pedestrian or electric vehicle that suddenly crosses, and in order to avoid such a risk, the vehicle's automatic emergency braking system is mainly tested. It can be seen from the test report that the third Versailles C5 X 2023 model suddenly encountered a rear-end collision event at high speed, braking in time at 0.44 meters and successfully braking, inseparable from its third-generation automatic emergency braking system AEB, which can use the front camera and 77GHz millimeter wave front radar to jointly monitor static, dynamic vehicles, pedestrians, two-wheelers and other targets, such as detecting collision risk, the system will issue an alarm according to different degrees of event conditions, and if the driver does not take action after the alarm, The system will actively provide automatic deceleration braking, greatly reducing the probability of rear-end collision accidents.
Under Dongfeng Citroen's adherence to safety performance, the Versailles C5 X 2023 model has passed on the torch in terms of active and passive safety. Since its launch, it has successively won the 2021 China Top Ten Body and Five-Star "Driving Quality Star" and other safety standard test honors, and the Versailles C5 X 2023 model can withstand the certification of authoritative organizations and is a safety car worthy of customer trust.
What's more, the Versailles C5 X 2023 model has also upgraded safety equipment such as 360° panoramic parking image, front ultrasonic radar, and rear ultrasonic radar, completely saying goodbye to blind spots in the driving line of sight, effectively reducing scratches, collisions and other events, and further improving vehicle safety.
