Is the Mariana Trench on the high seas?
The Mariana Trench is a trench located in the western Pacific Ocean, about 250 kilometers east of Guam, and is one of the deepest marine geological formations in the world. Most of the Mariana Trench lies within the high seas, but it also involves areas in some countries, such as Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands in the United States. Under international law, the high seas refer to areas not under the jurisdiction of any country, and the Mariana Trench, although most of the area is located on the high seas, also involves the waters of some countries.
