In the "Wise Man", there is such a record: I hold the bow and arrow, and the public and the hammer follow, although millions of people are like me! This sentence came from Li Shimin's mouth, and it was what he said to his brave general, Chi Jingde. Wei Chi Jingde was Wei Chi Gong, who was one of the twenty-four heroes of Tang Taizong's Ling Yan Pavilion. Li Shimin could openly state that as long as Wei Chigong was around, then even if there were a million enemy troops, there was nothing to be afraid of. It can be seen from this that Li Shimin has considerable trust in Wei Chigong and believes in Wei Chigong's ability.
At the end of the Sui Dynasty, Li Shimin and his father raised an army to chase after the Central Plains, and on the way to the conquest, they confronted Wei Chigong. At that time, although the two sides were in a hostile position, Li Shimin admired Wei Chigong quite much, and he felt that this was a rare general and wanted to include him under his command. In the battle against each other, Wei Chigong was brave and invincible, killing countless Tang army leaders. Li Shimin's subordinates spoke up one after another, saying that Wei Chigong was unruly and could not be retained, and should be directly killed. Li Shimin did not listen, he sent people to persuade him to surrender, and in the case of danger, Wei Chigong was forced to be helpless and finally surrendered.
After receiving such a general, Li Shimin was overjoyed, not only did not suspect the other side, but also immediately made him the commander of the Right Province. Seeing that Li Shimin treated himself so sincerely, Wei Chigong really began to assist Li Shimin wholeheartedly. Before the change of Xuanwu Gate, Wei Chigong accidentally learned of Li Jiancheng's plan and others to get rid of Li Shimin, and without hesitation, he told Li Shimin the news and persuaded Li Shimin: "If the great king does not correct it quickly, he is afraid of being killed by him, and the society will be in danger." (This quote is from "Think Tank")
This remark awakened Li Shimin, who was strong first, launched the XuanwuMen Revolution, seized the throne, and became the lord of the world. Because of his merits from the dragon, coupled with Li Shimin's reuse and trust, Wei Chigong rose step by step and ascended to the position of Duke of Wu. When the Turks attacked, Wei Chigong led his troops into battle, and the enemy fled in ashes. After this battle, Wei Chigong's prestige deepened, and his position in the court was even higher, and many civilian and military generals had to avoid him for three points.
In the midst of a compliment, Wei Chigong's mentality changed, and people were a bit arrogant and arrogant, unable to see their position clearly. There is also such a record in the "Wisdom Tank": After moving to tongzhou, tasting the feast of Qingshan Palace, and sometimes there are people in the class, Jingde angrily said: "What merit does Ru have?" Sit on top of me! "Rencheng King Daozong was subordinate to him, because of the interpretation of the metaphor. Respectfully, he punched the Daoist Sect, and even to the point of hesitation, Emperor Taizong did not hesitate.
This record in the "Wisdom Tank" tells that Li Shimin led a group of courtiers to hold a banquet, and the people attending the meeting were seated according to the size of their official positions. After Wei Chigong arrived at the scene, he found that there was actually a person sitting in front of his position. Wei Chigong was not happy, and felt that he was being despised, so he was furious:
"What credit do you have?" Do you deserve to sit on top of me? ”
Li Daozong, the king of Jiangxia County, who was sitting below Wei Chigong, saw that the situation was not right and hurried out to fight the round field. But Wei Chigong didn't buy it at all, and he punched someone with a fist, and Li Daozong couldn't dodge it and hit a punch. All this was witnessed by Li Shimin, and the banquet finally broke up without joy.
At the banquet held by the emperor, he dared to make such a disturbance, which showed that Wei Chigong's mentality had really changed. Li Shimin was not pleased with this and planned to knock the other party. The "Wisdom Tank" records that Li Shimin warned Wei Chigong through Han Gaozu's killing of the hero:
"Looking at the history of the Han Dynasty, I saw that the gaozu meritorious people were few and far between, and it was especially important to see that gaozu had achieved it. And since he has taken the throne, he has often wanted to preserve the heroes and make his descendants endless. Ran Qingju officials violated the "Constitutional" Law, and Fang Knew Han and Peng Yi were not hanzu's sorrows. National affairs, only rewards and punishments, non-division of grace, uncountable deeds, self-cultivation, no regrets. ”
Hearing this, Wei Chigong's cold sweat was about to come down, and he immediately woke up and did not dare to be arrogant and arrogant. Seeing this, Li Shimin was also much relieved. But he also knew that Wei Chigong's personality was like that, even if he could converge for a while, it would be impossible to converge for a lifetime. Simply did not see that he was not upset, and transferred him out of the capital, so Wei Chigong went to Yanzhou to take up his post. But Wei Chigong was after all a "fierce tiger", with strong ability, not in front of his eyes, and Li Shimin felt worried. Later, someone reported that Wei Chigong had a disobedient heart, and Li Shimin was also suspicious. He summoned the man before his eyes, intending to test it.
When Wei Chigong saw that the emperor was suspicious of himself, he was terrified, so he immediately took off his clothes, revealed the knife scars on his body, and expressed his loyalty to Li Shimin. Li Shimin believed it on the surface, but he still had doubts in his heart. Therefore, within a few days, he said that he wanted to marry his daughter to Wei Chigong as a wife. At that time, the princess was only 16 years old, just in the midst of Fanghua, but Wei Chigong was already 55 years old, and from the perspective of age, the two were not compatible at all. Ordinary people should be ecstatic to have a young and beautiful princess with a noble birth as their wife, right? But Wei Chigong was not an ordinary person, he felt the deep meaning of Li Shimin--Li Shimin was testing him.
It is recorded in the "Wisdom Tank": "Shang also tasted the honorific virtue: "How about the desire to take a female wife?" Jingde prostrated his head and thanked him: "Although the wives of the courtiers are despicable, they have been poor and lowly together for a long time." Although the subject does not learn, it is not easy for the ancients to be rich and not easy to marry, which is not what the subject wishes. "The upper is the end.
If he really accepted this favor from Li Shimin, then it would not be long before the Wei Chi family would be destroyed. Think about it, the emperor's daughter, that is the golden branch and jade leaf, no matter which young talent in the world is married, it is considered a low marriage. Wei Chigong was a man in his fifties, and he dared to think of the princess, how arrogant and arrogant he was to dare to make such a move. Therefore, once Wei Chi accepted this gift with joy, then his death date was not far away. Fortunately, he was able to carry it clearly and directly refused the emperor's reward. The emperor was obviously satisfied with this result, and although he did not say much, he did not do much.
After this incident, Wei Chigong was really afraid, he felt that the imperial heart was unpredictable, and the grace may be temporary, but it will not be a lifetime. After thinking this out, Wei Chigong told the old man to return to his hometown, and from then on he wandered around at home, practicing Dan and cultivating himself, and no longer asking about the affairs of the DPRK. Fortunately, he retired in time to live to the age of 74 and died peacefully at home, receiving a good death. After his death, Li Zhi remembered his merits and gave him the nickname "Zhongwu" and buried him in the Tomb of Emperor Taizong.
