In 1580, Spain invaded Portugal and sent warships to control Madeira. After Portugal freed itself from Spanish rule in 1640, the Madeira Islands were also owned by Portugal.

In the 17th century, wine production began in Madeira due to the large-scale cultivation of grapes in Madeira. The economy of Madeira has developed considerably. In 1775, the Portuguese statesman Marquis de Pombal announced the abolition of slavery in Madeira, but blacks chose to fight Portugal.

In 1804, the British sent warships to occupy Madeira, which Britain had returned to Portugal before defeating Napoleon's empire. Portugal chose to have the Madeira archipelago.
