Dong Song
Born in Beijing in 1966 and graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of Capital Normal University in Beijing in 1989, Song Dong is an important contemporary artist in China. Song Dong incorporates a variety of artistic techniques, including performance art, photography, projection, videography, and installation, to question the concept of perception and express the ephemeral nature of existence and tradition. Song Dong uses art to explore or liberate the relationship between himself and his family, the public, and even physical space, directors, and objects, and to build a bridge between poetry and politics and the universe.
Song Dong has participated in many international exhibitions, including documenta in Kassel (2012), Venice Biennale (2011), Liverpool Biennale (2010), São Paulo Biennale (2004), Istanbul Biennale (2003), Gwangju International Biennale of Contemporary Art (1995, 2002 and 2006), Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (2002), Guangzhou Triennale (2002), Taipei Biennale (2002) and the 18th Global Video Festival (2000), and in 2009, he held a solo exhibition "Making the Most of It" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2001, he collaborated with artist Yin Xiuzhen on the project "Chopsticks". In 2005, together with Hong Hao, Yu Yu, Liu Jianhua and Leng Lin, he established the "Political Pure Form Office" for individual artists. Song Dong received the UNESCO Young Artist Award (2000), the Gwangju International Power Band Art Biennale Grand Prix (2006), the US Food and Drug Administration's Art China Annual Impact Award (2010), and the San Francisco Certificate of Honor (2011).
