"Obedient, can you show your hands and hands to your aunt?"

"Ah, we have a little badge on our hand pole, you know? It was given to you by an angelic aunt dressed in white when you were very young! This little badge is to protect our health! ”

"Scar" - the first health "badge" imprinted on children

Recently, in a small farm yard in a township in Pingwu County, the staff wearing a disease control vest was carefully communicating with the child in front of him who was still shaky, explaining to him that he was not a bad person, but just wanted to check whether the "scar" on his arm existed to determine whether he had been vaccinated according to the normal process.

In May 2023, in order to understand the vaccination status of the national immunization program for school-age children in Mianyang City, evaluate the effectiveness of the city's immunization program, and provide a scientific basis for further improving the quality of the city's immunization program for school-age children in the future. Mianyang CDC dispatched professional and technical personnel of the city's immunization program, formed a number of on-site investigation teams, and carried out the sampling survey of the vaccination rate of the national immunization program in accordance with the "2023 Sichuan Provincial National Immunization Program Vaccination Rate Sample Survey Plan" issued by the Sichuan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The "scar" is the scar left after BCG vaccination, usually in the upper forearm of the child, and in the mainland, every newborn baby or child aged 3 months to 4 years who has a negative tuberculin test (PPD test) is vaccinated with BCG. BCG is a vaccine used to prevent tuberculosis. After vaccination with BCG, the body can produce specific immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which can prevent the reproduction and spread of the bacterium in the human body, and is mainly used to prevent severe tuberculosis such as tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis in infants and young children. BCG is a national immunization programme vaccine (formerly a vaccine) and is administered free of charge by the government.

Because BCG vaccination will leave a "scar", the staff of disease control and control affectionately called the "scar" the first health "badge" imprinted on every child during the sample survey. Don't underestimate this small "scar", the "scar" rate of children, but disease control experts judge the quality of vaccination work in local vaccination units.

"Scar" - the first health "badge" imprinted on children

In May this year, Mianyang City conducted a sample survey of vaccination rates under the national immunization program in five townships in each of the two provincial sample counties in Fucheng District and Pingwu County. The CDC investigation team randomly selected 7 local age groups born from 2015 to 2022, with a total of 2,940 children in each age group, and carried out the investigation work through household visits and rapid surveys. In addition to checking the "scar" and vaccination certificate of BCG after vaccination in the 0-1 year old group, it is also necessary to check the roster of local kindergartens and schools, and verify the vaccine foundation and booster immunization status of the national immunization program in combination with the vaccination records of the Sichuan immunization program information management system, so as to find out the true vaccination rate of the local national immunization program.

After preliminary assessment, the vaccination rate of the national immunization program in the township unit was above 90%, which comprehensively and truly reflected the vaccination rate of the national immunization program for school-age children in Mianyang City.

So now let's roll up our sleeves together to see if we are the children around us and whether there is a health "badge" of "scar" on our arms! However, the uncles and aunts of disease control said that "scar" is generally available to 90% of children after vaccination, but some children do not. For children without "scars", as long as there is a clear BCG vaccination record, there is no need for catch-up vaccination! (Zhang Ling, Zuo Ling)
