In the middle of the Puxi area of Shanghai, there is an artificially excavated river that originates from Dianshan Lake and reaches the Huangpu River, hence the name Dianpu River. It is an artificial river channel excavated in 1976 and one of the large-scale water conservancy projects in Shanghai since liberation.
The Minhang section of the Dianpu River has a total length of 8.6 kilometers and flows through three towns: Xinzhuang Town, Gumei Road Street and Meilong Town, which is the dividing river channel of the water conservancy division of Diannan and Dianbei, and is also a model river and lake built by Minhang.

In the sixties and seventies of the last century, the low-lying Qingpu and Songjiang areas in Shanghai were plagued by floods. In order to drain the stagnant water of more than 500,000 mu of low-lying farmland in the hinterland of the two places, the Dianpu River Project was officially launched in December 1976, and on the basis of dredging the original local Grab Kai River, Caogang River, Henglu and Puhui Pond, it was cut and straightened, widened and deepened, and some new river channels were excavated. The project is under the unified command of the Shanghai Dianpu River Engineering Headquarters, and each county sets up the engineering headquarters accordingly.

In order to complete the project on time, a total of 140,000 migrant workers from six counties, Qingpu, Songjiang, Jinshan, Shanghai, Jiading and Baoshan participated in the excavation. At that time, almost every household in Xingxing, Xinguang, Nanma, Dongwu and other villages in Xinzhuang was full of migrant workers from Kaihe in Jiading, Baoshan, Jinshan and other counties. While completing the daily tasks of picking mud and transporting, they also used their spare time to help the landlord carry water and sweep the floor, and the owner also mended and washed and brushed for the migrant workers.

Finally, it took five months, and in April 1977, the entire 46-kilometer line of the Dianpu River was completed and opened to water. The construction of 5 highway bridges, 8 tractor bridges, 2 railway bridges, Shanghai-Hangzhou railway rerouting project and Dianpu River East Gate began in 1975 before the start of river earthwork and was basically completed in November 1976.

The excavation of the Dianpu River not only benefited the original 500,000 mu of low-lying land, but also became the main inland waterway in the Taihu Lake Basin, which can be navigated by 100-ton cargo ships, shortening the voyage from Taihu Lake to the Huangpu River by 30 kilometers. Meilong and Xinzhuang in the Minhang area have also been able to improve soil and transportation.

Standing on the bridge of the east gate of the Dianpu River in Xinzhuang Town, the flow of non-motor vehicles and pedestrians is endless, here and the surrounding Qixin Road Bridge, Shuiqing Road Bridge and Outer Ring Road Bridge, although ordinary, but as if at the intersection of the times, to the west, a dam crosses the north and south; To the south, on both sides of Shuying Road, residential buildings are connected one after another, scattering human fireworks; To the north, the office buildings of Xinzhuang's business district soar into the sky.

In recent years, Shanghai has been increasing the construction of road and waterway landscapes, and there is a feeling of being in a garden everywhere on both sides of the riverbank. The Dianpu River embankment landscape corridor has also become one of them, constituting the urban green life axis of citizens, providing citizens with more opportunities to contact nature, and the plant landscape along the river presents the characteristics of spring flowers and autumn fruits, summer shade and winter posture.
