Tic disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by involuntary, recurrent, rapid muscular motor tics and vocal tics in one or more areas. Tics usually begin in childhood (most common between ages 5 and 12) and may persist into adulthood.
Manifestations of tics
1. Motor tics
For example, what our parents say about blinking is actually a twitch of the eye muscles. There are also some facial twitches such as shrugging noses, eyebrow picking, grinning, and even some neck twisting, belly bulging, kicking, arm throwing, pouting buttocks and so on.
2. Phonogenic tics
For example, the child's throat makes some strange sounds, "screaming" to clear the throat, birds barking, dogs barking. Some children will even say some profanity, that is, swear words, such performances.
Tics is a mental illness, quite difficult to cure, but in time in the case of professional treatment, most of the children's condition can be effectively controlled and alleviated, studies have shown that 50% of patients recover completely, about 40% of patients partially improved, only about 5%-10% of children continue to adulthood.
The recovery of Tic is affected by many aspects, including the child's condition, diagnostic classification, treatment sooner or later, drug therapy response, and environmental factors at home and around school. Tic syndrome is divided into three types according to the course of the disease, and its treatment effect and prognosis are not the same.
What does tics look like against?
The first type: transient tic disorder, as the name suggests, has a short course of disease, often the disease is relatively mild, some are transient, some can heal on their own, and it is one with the best prognosis.
The second type: chronic (persistent) motor or vocal tic disorder, this type of tics, the course of the disease is very long, lasting more than several years, the symptoms are repeated, the condition fluctuates for a long time, the disease develops relatively slowly, the longer the course of the disease, the more difficult the treatment, and the tic symptoms can be accompanied for life.
The third type: Tourette's syndrome, this type of tics, the possibility of cure is very small, is the heaviest of the three types of tic disorders, tic symptoms are serious, and multiple, there are motor tics and vocal tics, often accompanied by serious psychological and behavioral problems and psychiatric comorbidities, 1/3 of patients can be accompanied by foul language, rapid development of the disease, the course of the disease is protracted, difficult to cure, and some patients have symptoms that last until adulthood.
Therefore, early detection, early treatment, rational drug use, regular treatment, and at the same time with psychobehavioral therapy, tic symptoms can generally be reduced within half a year and gradually controlled. Even if there are a small number of tic symptoms, children can live and learn normally, have normal social interactions, and can integrate into the environment and develop healthily.
