To solve this problem, on June 14, 1995, Basayev led 150 Chechen rebels to occupy a hospital in southern Russia and took more than 2,000 people hostage to demand that Russia withdraw its armed forces from Chechnya.

September 1, 2004, coincided with the opening day of school in Russia.
At about 9 a.m. that day, militants under Basayev broke into a secondary school in southern Russia and took about 1,200 students, parents and teachers hostage, about 70% of whom were students.
At 10:50 a.m., militants shot and killed some of the students' parents and teachers who were trying to resist and threw the bodies from the windows of the gymnasium. Russian police tried to negotiate with the militants, but it was not until 7:30 p.m. that the two sides established a channel for dialogue.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was forced to cancel a planned visit to Turkey, and he sent Russia's most elite Alpha special forces to participate in the hostage rescue.
