"Lookout": Looking back at the history of the university for more than a hundred years, how do you see the mission of Hohai University?
Xu Hui: In China at the beginning of the 20th century, rivers flooded and people's livelihood withered. In order to explore the road to water control and save the country, the Hehai Engineering College came into being. At the beginning of the founding of New China, the country was in ruins waiting to be rebuilt and the floods were serious. In order to govern the water and serve the country, the Department of Water Conservancy of Nanjing University, developed from the Hehai Engineering College, the Department of Water Conservancy of Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University and other colleges and universities, and the East China Water Conservancy College established the East China Water Conservancy College in 1952, where Yan Kai, Xu Zhilun, Liu Guangwen, Huang Wenxi and a number of other masters wrote a magnificent chapter of "River Thin Lake Storage and Water Conservancy Rejuvenation". The first is to give full play to the advantages of discipline characteristics and help the construction of the industry team. In 2011, the Ministry of Water Resources set up a human resources research institute in Hohai University, relying on the school to carry out water conservancy talent planning, decision-making consultation, theoretical research, etc., to provide support for the construction of water conservancy talent team. Every year, nearly 1,800 graduates of the school are employed in water conservancy-related industries, which is well received by employers.
