It is the capital of the Dutch province of Limburg with a population of 120,000.

It was built in the fourth century. In the eighteenth century, it was successively occupied by France and Belgium, and in 1830 it belonged to the Netherlands. There are sixth-century churches, modern art museums and other buildings. Tourism is important.
