Today I want to introduce you to the model couple in the bird world, the two-horned hornbill (Buceros bicornis), also known as the great hornbill.
The two-horned hornbill is a species of bird in the family Hornbillidae. The body length is about 95-130 cm, the wingspan is about 152 cm, and the weight is about 2-4 kg. Their most prominent features are a large mouth 30 cm long and a large and wide helmet process, the upper part of the helmet process is slightly concave, and the front edge forms two horn-like protrusions, like the large horns on the rhinoceros nose, and like the helmet of ancient samurai, very powerful, hence the name two-horned hornbill. Its massive beak has a bright yellow and black shell at the top. Seen from the front, the shell is U-shaped, concave at the top, and flanked by two ridges that form the front points, hence the Latin species' nickname bicornis (double horn). The back of the shell is red in females, while the front and back of the shell are black in males.
The easiest way to distinguish the gender of a two-horned hornbill is to look at the color of the iris and the color under the helmet process:
Male: the iris is red, the underside of the helmet process is black;
Female: The iris is white and there is no black below the helmet process.
Two-horned hornbills are called the "model couple" of birds because they not only raise offspring together, but are also very faithful to their partners. Once in love, they will stay together for a lifetime, if one dies unexpectedly, the other will never sneak up or find another new love, it will keep wailing, and will not eat anything again, and will soon die of hunger strike in sorrow, so the two-horned hornbill is also regarded as a symbol of chastity and love, and is called "lovebird".
The two-horned hornbill is currently in the mainland, mainly distributed in Yingjiang and Xishuangbanna, Yunnan.
The population of the two-horned hornbill is also declining dramatically due to habitat loss due to deforestation and human hunting. At present, the mainland lists the two-horned hornbill as a first-class key protected wild animal, and the IUCN is Vulnerable (VU) and CITES-I.
In order to protect the two-horned hornbill, we must not only strengthen the management of protected areas, strengthen patrol monitoring, strengthen environmental protection, protect natural ecology, control illegal hunting and capture, and strengthen the fight against illegal killing, but also strengthen scientific popularization and raise public awareness.
