Patrick fishes on the banks of the Nile in front of the Temple of Amboabu Simbel in Egypt

One day, little Patrick wanted to catch a white perch hidden under many branches, and the two fake baits available for seabass fishing in France at the time: minnow crankbaits and inline spinners, could not catch a hidden fish in that situation. So little Patrick invented a kind of bait himself—using a shiny knife into an egg as a lead pendant, making a vertical hook with a lead hammer, wrapped in a glove, and using jitter to attract fish. In this way, little Patrick caught the fish he wanted for the first time with his own bait, and his fishing and bait making process began.

※ Fishing footprints span more than 60 countries on five continents

Patrick joined the French Navy at the age of 21 and traveled to Africa after retiring in search of a mysterious local white sea bass that lives off the coast of the edge of the Sahara Desert. Although he did not find the perch during this journey, the strange environment and various legends about the fish opened his eyes. Patrick saw more possibilities for fishing. He began to see the world as an endless web of fish, with too many adventures waiting for him to try.

So Patrick embarked on a round-the-world fishing trail, traveling to more than 60 countries, fishing in different waters, and encountering many extreme situations. Speaking of one of the most impressive fishing spots, Patrick mentions not the well-known Florida or Pacific islands, but a dam lake in Morocco, Africa.

Youssef-ben-Tachfine is remotely located more than 80 kilometres south of the moroccan city of Agadir, where a drive through the Sahara Desert is a must. It is in this unknown African dam that there is a huge largemouth bass hidden.

Lake Yousef-Ben-Tachifarn

Patrick learned about this place by chance when he saw a photo. The photo showed a local farmer catching a giant 14-kilogram sea bass, which shocked him and wanted to find out. People living in the local countryside make a living by growing crops by the dam, and when they work at the water's edge, as soon as they find fish in the lake, they take the fishing line out of their wallets and catch a lizard as bait, which is how they catch that giant sea bass. Patrick went to that dam twice in six years, and there were too many sea bass (red bass pictured below), all huge.

Despite having been to many countries, Patrick was amazed by the fishing environment of this small Moroccan countryside. It is these unexpected windfalls that have always made him passionate and curious about fishing. He said there are too many unknowns in this world, waiting for people to discover.

※The number of fishing types exceeds 700 and there are more than 350 world records

Traveling around the world, Patrick finally broke the 700 fishing mark in 2013, including more than 350 world records certified by fishing associations such as the International Fishing Association (IGFA), France and Europe. For example, the longest freshwater largemouth bass (63cm), the heaviest sea carp (130kg)... The list goes on and on.

One of the most exciting fishing experiences was when Patrick was exploring Africa in his twenties, when he lived for a while in the Northern Sahara Desert with several local cliff anglers. He said he and cliff anglers often fish for sargo, swordfish and yellow croakers on the edge of cliffs more than 60 meters above sea level, which is very dangerous because people are likely to fall, and there are several fatalities there every year.
